I lost my technique, and now I'm upset, Matt Foreman
I lost my technique, and now I'm upset
Matt Foreman  |  October 10 2011  |  Olympic Weightlifting
I’ve always thought that one of the most frustrating things about being a weightlifter is that you can lose your technique.   Let me explain what I mean when I say “lose your technique,” although anybody who has been an Olympic lifter for any extended time period already knows exactly what I’m talking about. So…you’re learning the snatch and the clean and jerk, which are probably two of the most difficult skills in any branch of athletics. Yo......

Positive thinking, and other crap like that
Matt Foreman  |  September 26 2011  |  General Training
Ever have one of those moments that just makes your whole mood sour and pissy? I had one at the 2000 Olympic Trials in New Orleans. I was standing in the warm-up room, watching the best lifters in the country getting ready for battle. It was pretty hardcore being back there, let me tell you. Years earlier, a coach had told me that the intensity in the warm-up room at the Olympic Trials was so thick you could cut it with a knife. He wasn’t kidding, jack. So I should have been feelin......

High school kids aren't all idiots
Matt Foreman  |  September 18 2011  |  General Training
Man...it never ceases to amaze me how I seem to hear some of the smartest, deepest ideas from some of the most unlikely people.  I'm a high school English teacher.  Last week, my students turned in a personal narrative essay I assigned them.  One of the essays I read was from a student who will never, ever be confused with Ernest Hemingway.  Initially, I had this kid pegged as one of those types who will probably spend a lot of time with his han......

Love the one you're with

I'm writing this blog entry on September 11th, 2011.  As the whole world is aware of, this is the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attacks.  Ten years ago, we all found out that you can lose everything you have in an instant. Two years ago, my wife and I took a trip to New York City.  The first place we went when we got to the city was Ground Zero (site where the WTC used to be).  It was pretty intense to walk around the area and think about what ha......

Controlling the Tornado: Planning Your Weightlifting Training
Matt Foreman  |  October 28 2009  |  Olympic Weightlifting
This article will be focused on planning out your training program. And you’re out of your mind if you think I’m going to start with a slogan that you’ve already heard a million times like "Failing to plan is planning to fail." This slogan is a proven truth, but it should be painfully obvious. I shouldn’t have to remind you that planning is important any more than I should have to remind you not to eat yellow snow. However, there is obviously a good reason w......
Lessons from Romania: Nicu Vlad at the Olympic Training Center, Matt Foreman
Lessons from Romania: Nicu Vlad at the Olympic Training Center
Matt Foreman  |  December 31 2008  |  Olympic Weightlifting
Nicu Vlad is one of the greatest weightlifters of all time. The Romanian legend won the Olympic gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles games when he was only twenty-one years old, and that was only the beginning of his amazing career. Vlad went on to win the silver medal at the 1988 Olympics, the bronze at the 1996 Olympics (when he was thirty-three), and three world championships in 1984, 1986, and 1990. However, the accomplishment that Vlad is probably most famous for is his all-time world record ......
