Reponse to the new USA Weightlifting National Meet Qualification Procedure, Greg Everett
Reponse to the new USA Weightlifting National Meet Qualification Procedure
Greg Everett  |  August 15 2014  |  Editorial
For the most part, the reaction among weightlifters to the new USAW national meet qualification procedures has been positive, but there has been a surprising (to me, at least) amount of objection. I want to just address a few examples of these objections directly rather than trying to compose something entirely. The following chunks in quotations were pulled off of various FB posts. Below each one is my response. 1. "What other sport is worried about their events becoming too ......
2014 National Championships Recap, Greg Everett
2014 National Championships Recap
Greg Everett  |  July 22 2014  |  Editorial
This past weekend, Catalyst Athletics took 10 lifters to the National Championships in Salt Lake City. It was a long weekend, but it was a well-run meet in a great venue. Jes Liao (48 kg) and Blake Barnes (69 kg) were our first lifters on Friday. Both lifters have had a rough past couple months with training. Jes in the last couple months has slept at home only a handful of nights and only trained at Catalyst two days each week at the most because her job has had her out of town for a clien......
When Athletes and Coaches Need to Just Give Up, Matt Foreman
When Athletes and Coaches Need to Just Give Up
Matt Foreman  |  June 23 2014  |  Editorial
When I was in the 8th grade, my guidance counselor pulled me out of class one day and took me to his office to perform an exorcism on me. You think I’m kidding? Nope. Here’s how it all happened… I was a terrible kid when I was in junior high. I was disrespectful, mouthy, rude, and a huge troublemaker. My teachers openly hated me. Most of them actually told me that. How awful was my behavior? Well, my teachers eventually went to the school’s guidance counselor ......

Be a Good Gym Member: Safety, Respect and Taking Care of Equipment
Greg Everett  |  February 17 2014  |  Editorial
The way you treat the equipment in your gym says a lot about you, not just as an athlete, but as a person. Whether or not you know it, you’re being judged, and if it’s by me, it’s probably harshly. For those of you with good hearts, but not enough experience to know proper facility etiquette yet, here is a handy list of rules to help you take care of the gym you train in, show the people around you that you care, and be safe. Back Away from the Squat Rack If you’re......
Why I Don't Travel More for Seminars, Greg Everett
Why I Don't Travel More for Seminars
Greg Everett  |  February 12 2014  |  Editorial
I’ve been giving my own Olympic weightlifting seminars for seven or eight years now. I started helping my coach, Mike Burgener, at his seminars in 2006, and began providing my own when the demand was made known to me. Initially, I traveled a reasonable amount across the US and did fairly frequent dates. If you haven’t been around more than a couple years, you’ll have to believe me when I say the seminar landscape was very different back then. The only significant (by this I mea......
Greg Everett Quote Collection, Greg Everett
Greg Everett Quote Collection
Greg Everett  |  December 30 2013  |  Editorial
I was asked to post a bunch of the various things I've posted on FB and elsewhere over time in one convenient location, so here are some of the ones I could find easily. If you have others you like, post them in the comments! "As we reach the start of a new year, remember that success doesn't come from a single day of resolutions, but from living every day with resolve." "As you grow up, you have to become useful in life, not just good looking." "Don't forget th......
Strength, Bands & Staying in Your Lane, Greg Everett
Strength, Bands & Staying in Your Lane
Greg Everett  |  October 10 2013  |  Editorial
This is an article I’m regretting writing before I even start. One, because I know it will spur a bunch of time-consuming argument on the internet; two, because no matter what it will sound emotional; and three, because it feels a bit like trying to convince people that it makes more sense to eat with your hands than with your feet. I expect that the people who agree with what I’m going to say already agree with it, and those who disagree will keep on disagreeing, and probably like m......
Mensticular Fortitude: Dedication and Focus for Athletes, Greg Everett
Mensticular Fortitude: Dedication and Focus for Athletes
Greg Everett  |  May 13 2011  |  Editorial
Weightlifting is a very mental sport and success can be dependent on focus and attitude to remarkable degrees. Mental and testicular (or ovarian, if you prefer) fortitude is imperative not only for a given lift, but for a training session, a week, a cycle or a career. The long term fortitude is usually thought of more as discipline. For example, the discipline to eat when, what and how much is necessary, the discipline to sleep adequately, the discipline to deny yourself activities or other ......
Start of Days: Cortisol & Stress, Cameron Conaway
Start of Days: Cortisol & Stress
Cameron Conaway  |  November 30 2010  |  Editorial
There are movies, books, songs, political advertisements, religious texts and environmental organizations that use the phrase “end of days.” As a studied poet, I’m trained to flip clichés like rocks to see what is underneath. As an MMA coach and personal trainer, I’m trained to sift through science then apply these findings to my clients. How does the start of days – the time immediately after we wake – change our bodies chemically? What hormones are......
Starting a Weightlifting Team, Greg Everett
Starting a Weightlifting Team
Greg Everett  |  October 30 2010  |  Editorial
This month, I decided to provide a simple guide to starting a weightlifting team. More and more interest is developing in weightlifting competition, and the process can seem mysterious to those who have not yet been exposed to it. This article should help get you started. Administrative Considerations The process may vary a bit depending on where you live, but it will likely be similar to how it works in the US. USA Weightlifting governs the sport in the US under IWF rules and oversees ......
