The Pusher Don't Care: Ibuprofen And Weightlifting
Matt Foreman
February 16 2012
Weightlifting
What’s your opinion about ibuprofen?
I know it’s a subject that some of you probably aren’t hip to. Based on what I’ve seen on Catalyst Athletics, I think we’ve got pretty educated readers. It’s obvious from the comments I see on this website that many of you do thorough research on things, so I’m sure there are a lot of you who have done some reading on ibuprofen.
Consequently, I’m betting that many of you have ne......

What A Lovely Bottom
Matt Foreman

Weightlifting
Okay, a little personal information is necessary to write this post. I have to talk about myself so I can transition into talking about you. For those of you who don’t know, I had a major knee surgery back in June 2011. It was ACL reconstruction, which is the big kahuna. My surgeon told me that I would be able to expect the following recovery progression after the operation:
- Six weeks post-surgery- box squats above parallel
- Ten-twelve......

Dilemmas Of Competition And Retirement
Matt Foreman
January 29 2012
Weightlifting
I love it when I read things that get me thinking, because that’s when I get ideas for stuff to write.
One of the recent posts on this blog was from my friend Aimee Anaya Everett Fergie Madonna Spears, and one of the big questions in it was whether or not she wants to continue competing in weightlifting. Powerful writing with tons of heartfelt honesty, as is always the case with her. However, I was also really interested in all the comments that followed her blog. ......

What do you do when the thing you thought you loved is actually making you miserable? You find the reason. You have a good way of lying to yourself… I think that is where the old saying came from: your heart wants one thing but your mind wants another.
Here is my life story. And I am choked up and my eyes are clouded with tears, because I have to admit what I have known all along.
When I train I listen to Vanilla Ice. I bounce around to Britney Spears and Michael Jackson. I stre......

Coach, I Totally Get It Now! Coaching Cues
Matt Foreman
January 20 2012
Weightlifting
Here’s a weird little phenomenon to think about, because it’s something that works as a blessing for an athlete and an irritation for a coach.
In your time as a lifter, have you ever had a situation where somebody gives you a technical piece of advice that totally makes everything click? This is probably a small suggestion, usually from a random person who isn’t your regular coach, and you feel like the secret of the universe has been unlocked when you hear ......

The Point: Technique For Olympic Weightlifting
Greg Everett
January 17 2012
Weightlifting
I spend a lot of time on this website and elsewhere discussing weightlifting technique, often in intolerably boring detail. Why technical proficiency is necessary and important is been mentioned with regard to things like CrossFit™ and athletic training, but it occurred to me last night that I can’t think of a time when I’ve said explicitly why it’s important for… weightlifters.
Maybe this is unnecessary and I’m concerned for no reason, but presumably you&......

Maybe They're Not That Bad: Personalities In The Gym
Matt Foreman
January 11 2012
Weightlifting
I’m just going to ask you a blunt question, okay? Here it goes.
How often do you have to spend time in the gym with people you don’t like?
Think about the times, present or past, when you have to be around somebody you basically can’t stand. This might be somebody you have to train with as an athlete, somebody you coach, or maybe somebody you have to work with in some other way. Whatever the situation, this person bugs the hell out of you. I hate to ......

The Simplest Olympic Weightlifting Program In The World
Greg Everett
January 5 2012
Weightlifting
I've written down this same program so many times for so many people, I thought it would make sense to put it down here for other people to use. I'm sure things that look a lot like this have been floating around for decades because it makes perfect sense and is remarkably simple. I think I may have stuck it or something very similar in a newsletter at some point in the last couple years as well.
The basic structure is as follows:
Day 1
Snatch
Snatch Pull
Front Squat
Day 2
Jerk
Pus......

A Thank-you And A Warning
Matt Foreman
December 26 2011
Weightlifting
You don’t do sloppy work at your job, do you?
If you’re an airplane mechanic, you don’t just spray some WD40 on a malfunctioning engine and then say, “That’s all I can do. I hope this sucker holds together.”
If you’re a paramedic, you don’t give an aspirin to a screaming car accident victim and then go sit down to have a sandwich.
If you’re a stay-at-home mom, you don’t lie on your couch and watch soap o......
