The Simplest Olympic Weightlifting Program In The World
Greg Everett
January 5 2012
Weightlifting
I've written down this same program so many times for so many people, I thought it would make sense to put it down here for other people to use. I'm sure things that look a lot like this have been floating around for decades because it makes perfect sense and is remarkably simple. I think I may have stuck it or something very similar in a newsletter at some point in the last couple years as well.
The basic structure is as follows:
Day 1
Snatch
Snatch Pull
Front Squat
Day 2
Jerk
Pus......

A Thank-you And A Warning
Matt Foreman
December 26 2011
Weightlifting
You don’t do sloppy work at your job, do you?
If you’re an airplane mechanic, you don’t just spray some WD40 on a malfunctioning engine and then say, “That’s all I can do. I hope this sucker holds together.”
If you’re a paramedic, you don’t give an aspirin to a screaming car accident victim and then go sit down to have a sandwich.
If you’re a stay-at-home mom, you don’t lie on your couch and watch soap o......

How To Keep The Prs Rolling
Mike Gray
October 28 2011
Weightlifting
Remember your first year or two of Olympic Weightlifting when you were literally hitting PR’s every week? Remember how awesome that felt? I remember guys who would train at the same place I did actually start plotting where they would be a year from where they were at the time and say things like “Well if I keep up at this rate I am snatching 80k now but in a year I should be doing 150K”!
There aren’t many things better for a lifter than a new PR. It feels so good and we......

Heaving Snatch Balance: I'm Sorry For Doubting You
Greg Everett
October 27 2011
Weightlifting
Until maybe a year ago, I typically wrote off the heaving snatch balance as more of a piece in a teaching progression than a useful exercise. But in the last year, I've started using it more and more with some of my lifters and have decided it's actually one of my favorite exercises.
First, for those of you not familiar with the exercise, it's pretty simple: Start with the feet in your squat position and the bar on your back with a snatch grip. Dip at the knees smoothly and heave the bar up ......

Weightlifting Team Training Broadcast
Greg Everett
October 12 2011
Weightlifting
We've gotten enough requests that I've given in and decided to try doing a webcast of the weightlifting team's training once a week. My resistance was largely just based on not wanting to be stuck monitoring a computer while I should be coaching, but after doing a test run the other day, I've decided I can just set it up and let it go. Plus Saturday's are the day I jump in and train with everyone anyway. So you won't see any artistic camera work, but you'll be able to get a good view of the main......

Lessons Revisited
Greg Everett
October 4 2011
Weightlifting
I'm in the middle of a project that involves me re-reading all of long-time regular Performance Menu contributor Matt Foreman's articles, and I just finished reading Lessons from Romania, which we published in December 2008. Even though this article has been available for free on the site since then, I have to assume a lot of our newer readers and site visitors haven't read it, and for those of you who have, I want to encourage you to read it again. This is easily one of the best articles we've e......

Gregception
Aimee Lee
October 2 2011
Weightlifting
Steve Pan came up with the phrase "Gregception", so he gets the credit for that. This came about because Greg wrote an article titled "Improving the Clean through a Better Turnover”. I was especially interested in this article because my clean turnover ranges from really good to crazy bad. My clean grip is fairly wide. I like it there because I have a short torso and I want to get it as close to my hips as possible. It's anyone's guess really as to where my grip ends up when......

99 Problems But Audra Ain't One
Aimee Lee
September 18 2011
Weightlifting
Audra Dunning was one of the first weightlifters I met at Catalyst. She was welcoming and nice from day one. Don’t take this to mean that she’s all puppy dog tails and cotton candy; she is far from it. It can be awkward when you’re the latest to join a group of people who already know one another well. But Audra made this transition easy for me. Luckily she and I are similar in the ways that matter. Regardless of how much I was lifting or how crappy my lifts looked, Audra was e......

Sewage Shake
Mike Gray
September 18 2011
Weightlifting
I dig the nutritional aspect of the weightlifting game.
I really try to get the most out of what I eat and I love to come in just under my weight while trying to hold onto the most amount of muscle I can. Watching what I eat has always been pretty important to me and having to make weight gives me even more reason to really think about what I consume. I have read plenty about post-workout nutrition and I understand its importance so I devised a shake that tries to encompass everything I believ......

Trust And The Art Of Competition
Jocelyn Forest
September 16 2011
Weightlifting
“Uh, odds are they are probably basic white, cotton, underpants. But I sort of think well maybe they're silk panties, maybe it's a thong. Maybe it's something really cool that I don't even know about. You know, and uh, and I started feeling... what? What I thought we were in the trust tree in the nest, were we not?” – Frank Ricard (Will Ferrell) I have a crazy love affair with weightlifting. I didn’t mean for it to happen, it just sort of did. It all sta......
