Lessons Revisited
Greg Everett
October 4 2011
Weightlifting
I'm in the middle of a project that involves me re-reading all of long-time regular Performance Menu contributor Matt Foreman's articles, and I just finished reading Lessons from Romania, which we published in December 2008. Even though this article has been available for free on the site since then, I have to assume a lot of our newer readers and site visitors haven't read it, and for those of you who have, I want to encourage you to read it again. This is easily one of the best articles we've e......

Gregception

Weightlifting
Steve Pan came up with the phrase "Gregception", so he gets the credit for that. This came about because Greg wrote an article titled "Improving the Clean through a Better Turnover”. I was especially interested in this article because my clean turnover ranges from really good to crazy bad. My clean grip is fairly wide. I like it there because I have a short torso and I want to get it as close to my hips as possible. It's anyone's guess really as to where my grip ends up when......

99 Problems But Audra Ain't One
Aimee Lee
September 18 2011
Weightlifting
Audra Dunning was one of the first weightlifters I met at Catalyst. She was welcoming and nice from day one. Don’t take this to mean that she’s all puppy dog tails and cotton candy; she is far from it. It can be awkward when you’re the latest to join a group of people who already know one another well. But Audra made this transition easy for me. Luckily she and I are similar in the ways that matter. Regardless of how much I was lifting or how crappy my lifts looked, Audra was e......

Sewage Shake

Weightlifting
I dig the nutritional aspect of the weightlifting game.
I really try to get the most out of what I eat and I love to come in just under my weight while trying to hold onto the most amount of muscle I can. Watching what I eat has always been pretty important to me and having to make weight gives me even more reason to really think about what I consume. I have read plenty about post-workout nutrition and I understand its importance so I devised a shake that tries to encompass everything I believ......

Trust And The Art Of Competition
Jocelyn Forest

Weightlifting
“Uh, odds are they are probably basic white, cotton, underpants. But I sort of think well maybe they're silk panties, maybe it's a thong. Maybe it's something really cool that I don't even know about. You know, and uh, and I started feeling... what? What I thought we were in the trust tree in the nest, were we not?” – Frank Ricard (Will Ferrell) I have a crazy love affair with weightlifting. I didn’t mean for it to happen, it just sort of did. It all sta......

Do Not Want

Weightlifting
“DO NOT WANT” – three little, but effective words stated to me by Greg one day during practice when I did a clean off the blocks that was so horrendous, even I had to glance at him with a look of terror and somewhat disbelief as I was still completing the lift. For Greg of all people to have absolutely no other feedback or critique other than DO NOT WANT, the message came through pretty damn loud and clear!! Some days, I feel like this statement is the theme of my entire practi......

Pulling Blocks
Greg Everett
September 6 2011
Weightlifting
We've had a number of people email or comment asking for a tutorial on how to build pulling blocks. I'm not going to do a full-blown instructional article, but I'll cover the important details quickly. First, the basic construction is the same as our jerk blocks, which you can read all about in this article - stacking sections made, in this case, of 2x4s. The dimensions are 21" wide and 36" long. This is plenty big for even the most timid block lifters. The 21" width is also conve......

My First Four Months

Weightlifting
I started training at Catalyst Athletics with Greg Everett on April 18th, 2011. I had almost zero experience with the snatch and the clean and jerk. I played rugby for seven years and had used crossfit as a way to get rugby fit, and it worked. When I quit playing rugby I thought I'd just do crossfit, but that got boring fast. I started a "strength" program last November and discovered that I like to front squat. My crossfit coach encouraged me to try olympic lifting. The only thing I h......

New Programs!
Mike Gray
September 2 2011
Weightlifting
I have to say I love them. It’s that start of a new program that has limitless possibilities that I really enjoy. The thought of new PR's and the day to day battle that just gets me fired up to get started. I have a system I have used for years when it comes to programs starting way back when with that "ADD 50lbs TO YOUR BENCH ROUTINE" out of an old MM2k Magazine that really just grounded your shoulders to dust and made sure I never wanted to flat bench ever again. 1. Print it ou......
