I will now get my own rebound and crossquote without attribution what I think is a fairly well thought out response to whatever controversy this issue might raise. While thsi is not my quote, I wholeheardtly agree that use of exegenous substances, to enjoy oneself from a health, reacreational, aestetic or sprititual standpoint are needlessly villified in this society.
I also suspect that Royce was probably using a little juice to deal with his wrecked up joints and retain a little meat while cutting to what apears to be a relatively lean condition for him.
"Anabolics can have a dramatic effect, in a positive fashion, on both feelings of well-being and health itself. At low, safe, cheap doses.
From a top level fighter to the weekend softball player, intelligent use of testosterone and it's analogues can be a safe and inexpensive way to help maintain body integrity and enhance recovery from injuries.
Let's go into this further:
Let's take nandrolones and it's well known side-effect of soothing and sometimes healing ragged and beat up joints (and keep in mind that the mechanisms about this have only been proposed and theorized about).
How is taking a shot of deca-durabolin every week (cost? ~$2-4 or less/weekly) different than popping some of the pain killers that simply mask the pain (think Celebrex ($5-10 a DAY) and some of the other classes of painkillers that have been shown to have a detrimental effect on the body, some so much that they've been pulled from the pharm shelves)
So, masking pain and causing liver failure is OK.
Using a "cheating drug" to help you actually heal is illegal.
The government, in it's infinite wisdom and to appease the clamorings about "playing fair" have criminalized anabolics to the extent that extensive misinformation has been spun out there for the masses.
Not only that, but what if, all of a sudden, you no longer had to train strength and conditioning 4x weekly to maintain your levels of strength and muscle mass, but only had to do it 2x weekly. What impact would that have on both wear and tear on the body, but also honing and perfecting the skills for your sport?"

I think Royce may have gone a little bit overboard. Does he look quite a bit bigger to anyone else? I don't recall him looking as built when he fought Matt Hughes.

For the record, I said that on IronGarm.

Dude, I was going to let you NOT out yourself as a drug fiend.
That said, I thought it was pretty smart and reasonable. I look at the massive doses of of exegenous goop that bodybuilders etc. use the same way as people with a ton of ink or peircings in their tender bits...it's all part of a continuum of body modification.
On the flip side, a good deal of this "industry/community/fanbase" talks about endocrine reponsese and eating patterns for maximizing hormonal outputs to accentuate the phenotype....elevated GH and Test and blahblogblah.....basically using "natural" methods towards achieving similar goals to the groups of folks using exogenous substances...
To steal a phrase, the goals of the most weekend warriors and the die hard bodymod competitor differ in degree, not kind.
In this case, I think it's a bit of a shock only becuase Royce and the Gracie's have a reputation, (hell, it's an ethos at this point) about their all natural diet and program......Royce did look pretty solid and rested....

FOR the record:
I've been tested 2-3 times by the USAPL and 1 time by the AAPF and 1 time by the USAW.
And passed cleanly each time.
Not that it means anything, because beating the tests is done by many as a routine. If I were using anabolics, I'd be embarassed because I would be a colossal pussy to be using and only lifting what I lift.
For a while I had a big interest in anabolics and that was spurred on by my father's wasting away when he was undergoing chemo for his lung cancer. LBM is directly related to survival time.
