View Full Version : IF 24 on/24 off and V-diet

I was curious if anyone has done it before?

V-diet's main drawback in my experience was the hunger. The fat loss was great and leaned me out tremendously but that hunger.
IF fixes that fast and easy. I've been really enjoying not thinking what, when and how much to eat for 24 hours at a time.
3600 calories in 24 hours from protein shakes sounds like a lot and that is.

So I'm going to try this experiment.
Workout - PM Strength Mesocycle. Technique work is going to be key and heavy emphasys put on that. Hypertrophy was fun.

Taking pictures once a week should help keep track.

Any ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Yikes, I have no suggestions but would be very curious to how your experiment turns out.

Sounds burly! Keep us posted.

I think your plan sounds doable on a Fast-5 type of program rather than a On/Off. I'd be interested in trying it a couple of times just to see how it would go. For me, if I feed on too many carbs (fruit, veg, salad) and not enough protein, the next day can seem looooong, as in unspeakable hunger.
Days like today, following a feast of Chinese food (lots of chicken), seem fine.

Protein shakes as my sole source of food during feed time? I'd like to see how that goes.

Allen and Rob - will do.
Ron - my hunger seems to disappear with 24-24 scheme, yet with Fast 5 I'm extremely hungry all the time. Carbs make the situation worse, but even with very low carb and calories kept at around 4.5-5k still the hunger does not seem to go away.

Good God I can down 15-20 pills at a time otherways it'd take me an hour to take all the fish oils, vitamins and bcaa's. Feel pretty cool.

I'm curious if you ever heard of supplementing your diets with HCl - supposingly to help assimilate all the goodies from the food one's eat.
Read it a while back in Poliquin's Question of strength. Tried - don't think it worked all that well.

Interesting.

As far as HCL, I thought that was a load of hooey. Chris Shugart tried it and saw little or no difference. I think many results of HCL supplementing, as written about on the T-Mag forums, was group induced placebo reactions.

My other drawback on the V-diet, or on using shakes as my sole source of kcals after a fast, was the lack of chewing. Gum doesn't cut it after a while.

Betaine HCL is legit...should be available at any hippy-health food store.

Okay. The diet part is easy so far.

BW 100kg

Tested for Strength Mesocycle.
Snatch 70 kg
Clean 95 kg
Pullup BW + 30lbs no kip
Press 70 kg

Danny Camargo is coming tomorrow for a 2 hour Olylifting workshop (Team Florida coach). That'll be super cool.

First week is over.

BW - 215 lbs. (-11 lbs total).

So far so good. Second week is usually more fun.
Appreciation for good food is growing. Cooking some food for my gf really becomes Zen-like practice. That's about as close to eating food I can get.

Sunday is coming and I'm very excited to eat.

Going to work on Clean and Jerk posters now (C&J and all the variations: HCln, PCln, HPC, SplJ and such).

It's been 9 days. So far so good. No ugly side effects that I had during the first V diet experiment. Shakes are getting old. Cheat meal coming up - it's going to plenty of meat.
Couple progress shots. Seems like diet is working with pretty decent speed and the PM 17 Strength workouts work well with it.

Totally forgot - BW is now 210-211 lbs (started at 225-227)

One side effect that I met last time during V-diet came back.

Blacking out and getting dizzy - as PM 17 Strength mesocycle prescribes did
1 RM test on Sn, C&J and FS. At 85 kg c&j while driving up out of a front squat - my vision started to get blurry (it was a slow squat for whatever reason). Jerked it real quick.

Got 90 and 95 kilos not super fast but decently with only minor blur and missed 97.5 due to lack of agressiveness.

BW is 209 lbs (95 kg even).

Cheat meal coming up in an hour.

Blacking out and getting dizzy

I'm no Dr but pretty sure that is NOT a good thing....nevermind if it happens while lifting which can be...Ummmm....possibly borderline fatal?? Might want to check with a Dr about what is going on....as I really would NOT suggest anyone follow any diet or eating plan that caused those types of reactions...there are a 100 other safer ways to lose fat.....

Leo I remember your last stint with the V diet a while back on the MH forums... amazing results but damn it seems like quite a price to pay. I know the masochist stuff is right up your ally, but damn dude.

Mike - agreed.

This experiment was unforgiving. Last time I did velocity the side effects were coming mildly and I was able to adjust accordingly and scale lifestyle and training. This time - boom - first lots of energy and everything is great, 24 hour fast and once I had my first and then second shake (at 3pm and 5 pm)on Sunday - my stomach disagreed severely.

I decided to stop the diet (my health is more important) and proceed with Paleo eating 24/24.

Sounded crazy enough and was worth a shot, but my body disagreed. Listen to the body someone said and that's the plan.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Remember that nothing is written in stone on these programs as you can make up your own versions.....such as 24hr V-diet (liquid), 24 hr eating foods......Drink liquid diet during the day, meal at night.....etc...etc....so many more safer modifications I am sure that will still get you great results....

It's one thing to eat very little and train lightly but it's another thing to eat protein-only and train hard.
I had blurry eye vision too last year when I'd do HIIT after weight training. This would only happen when carbs are lowish. Usually I'd have been eating few carbs the day before lifting (I train EOD) and not even have had many carbs before lifting, so the training session would make me go into deep ketosis.

Velocity diet is near 100% protein. Ever heard of rabbit starvation? Your body needs both protein & fat. Somehow people forget about the fat part.
I bet you feel much better eating Paleo-style!

hey leo, how's Paleo + IF going for you? i attempted the V diet 2 weeks back and decided the quick fatloss was not worth it either.

It's actually going really well.

I think the issue with the V-diet was not due to the diet itself rather due to the caffeine pills I was taking for energy. Couple days after I stopped doing the diet - I had exactly the same symptoms just a tad milder half an hour after the caffeine pills (I don't like coffee, but been using regular caffeine 200 mg pills on and off for over a year now).

Cut the caffeine out completely - side effects were gone.

Yvana - I actually had quite a bit of fat in my diet (I was using Muscle milk instead of the Metabolic drive - tastes better, has a bit higher carb content and I know a couple people who had great success with it on velocity. My experiment was going allright too fatloss wise).

So once it was over I decided to amp my training, use ladders and metcon workouts Mon-Wed-Fri and Tue-Thurs - breathing ladder.
