View Full Version : Good Paleo Snack?

Took this idea from a post I saw on mountaining.

Backstory. I take a good paleo dinner to work and leave it in the station fridge. However, while out running calls, we get hungry. If I was at the station, I could just eat part of my dinner, but usually, since I have less health conscious partners, we usually end up at fast food. I try to eat healthy there and have small portions, but still not good. So I was thinking of something that doesnt need to be refigerated, something I can throw in plastic baggies and throw in my back pack.

I was thinking some homemade jerky and mixxed dried fruit. I know this is paleo, but also may be a little high in carbs. Is this good, considering Ill be eating it 4 times a week at least, or should this be kept for backpack type things?

I've bought the pemmican from US Wellness. It is a little pricey, but man, it hits the spot.

I just bought some Pemmican from US Wellness... it says keep it frozen, so it's sitting in the fridge, do I need to thaw this like traditional meat, or can I just take it out an eat it a few hours later...will it soften up?

It has the consistency of cookie dough when it is straight out of the fridge. Perfectly edible that way. Or you can let it soften up a bit by removing it for awhile.

Brandon, i made a recipe for zucchini meat balls. They could be convenient for you to make and then carry with you in a tupperware container. That is if you can eat meat cold? As it has mince beef as one of the main ingredients, along with zucchini.

Anyway, let me know if you would like the recipe (or if anyone else would like it). My computer crashed the other day and my friend hasn't yet had the time to get my recent stuff off the hardware. But i have it on backup disc.. so if anyones keen i'll rummage for it :p

Its one of my favorite hunger buster!

Other then that I have my trusty veggie bag which doesn't require the fridge.

There is always the boiled egg, which is fine unrefrigerated for the day. Also, canned tuna and salmon (the kind with the pull-top). If you are willing to carry a small tupperware to use as a bowl and a small, leak proof bottle with olive or flax oil (it'll be fine unrefrigerated too), then you can mix up your canned fish with oil and bagged veggies. I even carry a small container of dried herbs with me sometimes.

I carry food with me everywhere, and it's often chicken or meat. I kinda believe that we need the fridge less than we think. Of course, you could just get one of those small, lunch cooler things.

Isn't a true Paleo snack just taking a sharp rock, sharpening a stick and hunting the nearest prey? Although while over a friend's house they may not fully appreciate you chasing their poodle with a spear......

Sorry for taking so long to reply to this post. Have been busy, plus my sister left today for Dublin for 18months :(

But in good news, i was able to get my folders back from my computer that crashed and was able to get the zucchini ball recipe for you guys who are interested.

Zucchini Balls

Ingredients
285g grated zucchini, ends removed
285g minced beef
1 onion, finely chopped
2 eggs
1tbs fresh dill, finely chopped
1 1/3 cup almond meal
1tsp salt
Dash pepper


Instructions

Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees Celsius, fan-forced.

In a bowl, mix all ingredients together until well combined.

Roll zucchini mixture into 4cm balls and place on an oven proof tray lined with baking paper.

Bake for 25-35 minutes, or until browned and cooked.

Tried the Pemmican today. Let's just say I'm glad I didn't buy it in bulk.
