How is the Olympic weightlifting team chosen? I went the site and it showed 6-7 lifters. I thought we were sending more than that? All the weight classes mens and womens...what would that be, 20 plus alternates?

One other question...what do Olympic weightlifters do when they are not working out? Jobs, school, recovery?

Just curious...

Countries have to earn spots at the world championships - each place earns a certain number of points, etc. So the US women earned 4 spots (the max) and the men earned 2 (or 3 - we're not sure about this yet). Then the US lifters compete first at the Nationals (secondary qualifier) and the Olympic trials (primary qualifier). The athletes with the best totals get the spots (technically as a percentage of what the best in the world are doing - so essentially we try to send the lifters who have the best chance of medalling).

Regarding what they do, it depends. Some live at the training center in CO springs where they pretty much train, eat sleep and recover - they can go to college too (e.g. Casey Burgener got his BS while there). Others such as Melanie Roach live at home (she has a husband and 3 kids) and work in some capacity.
