View Full Version : Your top 5 supplements

The ZMA thread got me thinking:

If a nutrition store told you could get ANY 5 supplements for FREE (assuming that they were all equally priced so you wouldnt just get the most expensive ones), What would they be? Whey Protein does not count in this contest...Why? Because I started it and I make the rules! :p

I guess mine would be:
- ZMA
- Digestive Enzymes
- Probiotics
- L-Glutamine/Aminos
- Fish Oil

Yep. Perfect Mike.

I have some ZMA on order as of a few days ago but I am taking all of those plus some creatine. I take BCAA's prior to working out, L-Glut if I run out of the BCAA's and Vice Versa.

Jeez-- Staying fit or (trying to be fit I should say :D )is expensive but worth it!

Oddly mine would be something like this:

Fish Oil
ZMA
Probiotics
Glutamine/Chondroitin
Creatine

1. ZMA
2. Cod Liver Oil
3. Probiotics
4. Digestive Enzymes
5. Raw, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

Just started the digestive enzymes on Tuesday and already loving the improved digestion.

ACV.....nice touch! Don't forget that "mother"!

Just curious are you taking it first thing AM and pre-bed empty stomach with water or using it will meals?

Chris Forbis
01-05-2007, 04:16 AM
It's definitely got the mother. I have to shake it up for a good minute each morning to get the sediment off the bottom.

4 days a week, I eat 2 meals a day. On those days, I try to do 1 Tbsp in water 15 min before and 1 hour after each meal (when I don't have to be somewhere an hour after eating).

The other 3 days I only eat one meal, and will have 1 Tbsp in place of my missing meal (which is early in the AM), in addition to on each side of the meal as above.

Anytime hydration is suffering, I will have some as well. The stuff is AWESOME for being well hydrated, and cheap to boot. It is actually dropping my overall water consumption (I assume because it is hydrating me more efficiently) by 2-3 gallons a week. It really seems like it helps my GI tract out when my diet goes south (such as over Christmas) as well.

Apple Cider Vinegar? Hmmm. Never tried it. Anyone else use it besides Chris? Where do you buy it Chris? Taste horrible?

Damn it Mike! I knew this post would cost me more money! :D

$3 for a 20oz bottle...I think you will be able to find enough pocket change in the park during bootcamps for this one. ;)

Find it at any local health food store. You want the "Raw Unfiltered with the Mother", organic is a bonus too....but no other kind will do.

Good luck getting it down.....it's rough. Oh yeah, don't take it straight (you make that mistake once). I usually say 1 tbsp in 8oz of water. If you are brave and don't get sick on more, you may be able to build up to it. But....good luck.

Thanks.

I have been sprinkling some Himalayan Sea Salt on some food lately also.

why are you looking from work!

Fish oil
ZMA (just started this month)
Mulitvitamin
Digestive enzymes (just started this month)
creatine

But I guess if I could get anything free I would have to include BCAAs and glutamine.

What type/brand of creatine are you using Jeremy? Monohydrate by chance?

Steve Shafley
01-05-2007, 04:35 PM
Fish oil
Multi
Creatine
ZMA
Decent protein

The ACV didn't seem to do anything for me, but I did acquire a taste for it (Bragg's) in the morning. 1 shot in a glass of water.

I ran out, and got kind of concerned about really increasing my acid load, so didn't replace it.

Steve Shafley

Using creatine:

Start with monohydrate.
Make sure it's completely dissolved when you drink it. I use a bit of hot water, then plunk it into crystal light or something, or just pound it down hot.

If you aren't getting anything from it, consider trying one of the other versions of creatine out there, but do your research first.

No real need to load, though you can if you feel better about it.

Mike ODonnell

Steve,

What's your creatine dosage 5g? 10g? Also do you think PWO is a better time or anytime will do?

Bobby Spencer
01-07-2007, 03:45 PM
1. Multivitamin w/o iron (or Vitamin K)
2. Creatine: Mono or Cee (I choose Cee)
3. ZMA
4. Acetyl L-Carnitine
5. Fish Oils Caps

If I could add a sixth it would be Digestive Enzymes.

The more I dig into and hear about ZMA...the more I have to believe that this is a #1 anabolic supplement on the market. I am sold on this stuff right now.

Mike:

5g/daily, whenever.

Sometimes I makes sense to do it in the morning, and sometimes post-workout.

Sometimes I load for that dramatic water weight gain and bowl spackling effect.

Yael Grauer

fish oil
magnesium
zinc
vitamin C
B vitamins

If I did the mg and zinc in the form of ascorbates, I'd get to add two more! I've done enzymes, probiotics, minerals and a multivitamin but don't feel like they help anymore, so I'd add the scientifically unproven Schuessler cell salts and Himalayan Crystal Salt sole. Other than fish oil, those are the only two I do consistently.

Oh! I've been doing BerryGreen--is that a supplement or a food?

Scott Kustes

Cod liver oil
Fish oil
Food-based multi, no iron
Zinc/mag
FloraSmart probiotics

Robert McBee

1) Cod Liver Oil during winter months
2) Probiotics
3) Digestive enzymes
4) Whey Protein powder(Metabolic Whey that I think Greg E recommended. Good stuff for a quick meal)
5) Multi vitamin/mineral

Scott K or anyone:

What whole food/no iron multi do you use?

Sam Lepore
01-08-2007, 02:43 PM
Robert--

I would go with Innate response for your whole food vitamin, etc, etc. Really good stuff.

If i'm not gettng grassfed meat I'd want some R-alpha lipoic acid. Good shorts lists.

Interesting to see no one listing CLA.

Chris Forbis

I'm hoping my high fat (75% lean) grassfed meat does the trick for CLA...

Sam Lepore

Yeah Chris. Good Stuff. I love the Grass Fed from US Wellness.

You eat a TON of it!!

I think Greg's list is something like:
1) Small woodland creatures, some still alive.
2) Cod liver oil, attained by ripping the liver out of a fresh cod (hand caught of course) and ringing it out over open mouth.
3) Coffee - black!
4) Iron, from munching on weight plates.
5) Vitamin C

Wow! I like that list!

Hmmm...Assuming non-grassfed meat options I'd say:
1-fish oil
2-probiotics
3-R-ALA
4-CLA
5-iron free multi.

Close, but more like this:
1) winstrol
2) clenbuterol
3) PCP
4) cocaine
5) fish oil

Just kidding of course. Las pharmacias have my mugshot posted on all the doors, so I can't get in anymore. How about this:

1) fish oil
2) protein/gainer bullshit (MRM metabolic whey/CytoSport Gainer)
3) glucosamine/chondroiton/MSM
4) BCAAs (MRM BCAA + Glutamine)
5) juice plus (seriously - i know a rep and it makes me feel like i'm not going to die of scurvy or something because i live on nothing but chinese food, pizza, carl's jr., protein powder and peanut butter).

Frank,

Like Steve recommends, I take monohydrate 5g a day (but I skip days quite often)

For example, I don't take it when I am fasting (gives me some gut pain).

FYI everyone, I am tallying everyone's votes up to now (had a few minutes). I won't re tally after this post (so your results won't be included).

ha! I'm working in the engineering dept of a wastewater plant and the time I waste? Lets just say its way laid back....

BTW, I'd have to add vit c to my list. Long forgotten to me was just how fast mega doses of it can kick a cold's ass when it just begins to start up. I felt one coming on a few days back and over the next two days ate prolly 20k mgs.....no more cold!
