View Full Version : Pimping my garage gym

I rearranged my entire gym this past week. Moved a bunch of stuff out of the garage and just generally got things in order. My wife gave me a 22 inch Flat Panel DVD Combo for Christmas so that completed the electronics for the man cave. Yes I wired it for surround sound. Here are a couple of pictures.

I swear I haven't used that curl bar for curls in years... it is mainly used to anchor my feet for situps.

And a garage gym upgrade wouldn't be final without the sweat angel to break her in. This was after TKO on Saturday. If you get the right angle you can see I am supporting Leo and Crossfit Evolution!

I am sure other people worked on their garage gyms or got new equipment over the holidays post up some pictures of your workout spot.

Nice.

Very bright for a cave...mine is a bit darker and more cramped.

It's not much, but it started like this...

http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/1386/starting1lh1.jpg

I've spent the better part of four days working on it. I'm one of five tenants in this house, and every time a tenant is replaced, he ditches half of his stuff in the garage and leaves it there. A bit more work, and it'll be good.

Used to have this place (http://patrickhdonnelly.blogspot.com/2008/01/my-home-gym.html).

That sir is one hell of a change. Nice space. Do you have a spot to hang your rings in there?

I did in a previous life. Leo and I keep threatening to go and do one now. I loved it but was unhealthy and overtrained the entire time. I saw a friend while I was training for a half ironman in the summer of 2004 and he asked what POW camp I had escaped from.

I still love to ride, run and swim I just don't train them as a sport anymore. Leo wanted to do a triathlon on his single speed so I felt like I had a good chance to take him.... maybe.

Ack. Triathlons, blech. Been there, done that. Derek, on the POW note, I remember another trainer at the UA gym I worked at during my undergrad triathlon days that commented on my sunken cheeks--the treasured POW look. I got down to 168# at 6' tall, won't be doing that again. Oh yeah, the blood sugar issues from cramming down carbs were awesome too.

If I didn't dislike pool swim training so much, I might do a sprint once in a while. At this point, I would only do a duathlon for fun.

I will post some pics of my garage gym soon.

Nice place, Patrick. Very simple and clean.

Unfortunately, no. There's an I-beam in the basement that I can sling them over, but it's low and not the best position. Fortunately, I intend to get a power rack, so that won't be much of a problem.

Nice place, Patrick. Very simple and clean.

Clean - always. Simple - for now. Hahah.

You can add an erg to mine now, and also 4 stall mats and a York Powerbar tomorrow.

I love Craig's List.

I've just got the mats laid out that like that until I can get around to making an actual platform. The York bar is nice. There are a few small dings in it, but the knurling is mostly intact in the outer edges (where the bench supports are, and where most bars feel slick as ice). Naturally, I've put some athletic tap on the rack to prevent the knurling from wearing down further. Paid $200 for the rack, and while I know I'll have to upgrade eventually, it'll suffice for now. It's about 6.5' tall with 1' spotter bars. I didn't realize it was that small from the ad posted on it, but now I'm sort of glad it was, since anything slightly bigger wouldn't have fit in my car. I jumped around a bit on the spotter bars, and they didn't flex at all (~200lbs bodyweight), so I figure they can hold a 405lb squat, which is all I'll be needing for the next year. It also has the locking saber-style spotter bars and bar-pins I like.

When I go to upgrade, I'll look into buying something from the big-brand names.

The Concept 2 bungee was loose, and still is a bit, even after I cut it down by about 2 feet, but I'll replace it soon. Only costs $5 to do it.

Derek, sorry for the thread hijack. I'm just a bit overenthusiastic.

very nice setup

Updates. The platform is 6x8' with a birch cent strip, and still needs to have the mats trimmed to fit, and then have everything screwed in together. 300kg of bumpers, a set of 1kg rule iron plates, a Pendlay 20kg bar, and a Pendlay 15kg Economy bar should be shipping out next week. The bars currently shown are a Pendlay 20kg Economy, York Powerbar, random chrome bar, and 1.9" OD black pipe barbell and dumbbell.

Patrick, just curious, is this an alternative application of student loan $$?

I know that's how I got my first sets of KBs...

No - all of this is coming out of my savings, at the moment.

Savings, student loans...it was all the same to me. At least you're putting it to good use that will pay itself off in (lack of) gym fees in the future.

Well if that was the first time I was called a pu**y I probably would be slightly offended.....

I guess it is just that really clear drop in width from shoulders to hips that contributed to the shape :D

And hopefully through giving me a place to do some personal training in the nearer present.

Not at all. I just have a juvenile sense of humor. For some reason I saw the sweat angel and thought "hey, fallopian tubes!"
