Let's say that two people consume two different diets. One person consumes a paleo diet, and another consumes a high glycemic diet. What will be the effects of these diets on body composition assuming that each person eats and burns an equal number of calories? Also, if they will have different effects on body composition, why?

Every study every performed looking at this question shows that a high carb/glycemic load diet destroys body composition. We see fat gain and muscle loss. Low carb diets by contrast show a potent protein sparing effect. This is particularly pronounced in the ketogenic state. Now why does a high carb diet do this? In simple terms: metabolic derangement. Nothing that we want to work is working and everything we do not want is ramped up to full throttle.
Seeing is believing however! Try a 70% carb, 20% protein and 10% fat as per the ADA recommendations and see what happens to your body comp and well-being. Make those carbs come from primarily “healthy” whole grains just to add to the fun. Try that for a month. Then try the Zone or Metabolic diet using paleo foods for a month and compare notes.

Sorry, I didn't make it very clear what sort of answer I wanted. Specifically, if two people have equal calorie consumption and loss through activity, but the paleo dieter has more favorable body composition, where does the extra energy go on paleo diet if not to fat? The high glycemic dieter will put on fat so I know where their energy is going. Since the paleo/low carb dieters calories are not going toward fat storage, it must be being utilized in some other way. What is that way?

In reference to your suggestion, I actually wouldn't put on any fat, I lived like that (as most people did) for a long time and always had low body fat. Even when not exercising regularly. :-) Even still, there is more to health than body comp., which is why I am a faithful paleo supporter. :-)

Whether we are in a caloric deficit or excess the main determinant of body composition is hormonal status. In your case a youthful hormonal profile was likely the reason for maintaining your leanness. Others of the same age are obviously not so lucky. If the case of the paleo eater vs. a high carber, in general the balanced, low glycemic load paleo eater is going to show better hormonal control and consequently better body composition. A caloric excess may be frittered away by uncoupling proteins in the mitochondria. Food is converted to waste heat, however this will only work to a point.

Paleodiet with intermediate carb intake gave me the best body composition.
Atkins gave me muscle fatigue from to few carbs with no energy to exercise.
High carb diet triggers too much insulin and fat storage.
