I saw a guy in BJJ class doing pullups with what looked like a towel made out of Gi material. It was about 18 inches wide and maybe 6 feet long. Anyone seen one of these around or on the web. I googled the crap out of it and came up with nothing. Anyone know where I can find one or atleast get bulk Gi material and make one.

They are power sleeves, created by Olympic judoka and BJJ BB Rhadi Ferguson. I have a set and like em.

Hatashita Sports sells them, but it looks like their site is having problems right now.

is it really that much of a benefit over a towel?

Night and day. The sleeves are longer (6' and 10') and made of gi material, and the gripping sequences are different. If all you ever use is a regular thumb to finger grip, then a towel would be fine for you. I use a lot of thumbless grips in my game.

I don't know how large a role grip fighting plays in BJJ. It's very important in judo, and grip fatigue will be an issue as you advance through a tourney.
