View Full Version : Butterfly MU? No False Grip?

I just saw the video on the crossfit main site from wednesday. this guy is doing "butterfly muscle ups." it's kinda cool that the elite rings can take that kind of force. my question though is that it doesn't look like he's using a false grip. it's hard to tell on my computer. is he not? if not, then how does he pull it off?

It's not a muscle-up. It is a front uprise.

Yet another example of CF trying to take something that has already been "invented" and re-name it to make it their own.

I don't know how anyone would hold a false grip through the bottom swing of that, nor what benefit a false grip would have in a move of such momentum out of the bottom...

Given Glassman is supposed to be a former gymnast I would think he would have more respect for it instead of trying to rename everything in gymnastics to his "standards."

Also, I hope that dude likes his rotator cuffs because he won't be having any in a few years if he keeps doing them like that. Not the greatest example of a good bail I would say. (Not that I can do better though mine used to suck badly).

I'm not sure what comment can be made on those two videos, but it's interesting to see the difference.


Anyway, if that's a front uprise, then it's definitely with more than 20% slop.

I would say it's more of an issue of CFHQ not knowing what a ring kip or a front uprise is. Remember "inverted burpee"? Really just a neck/floor kip with a jump press to HS.

Steve, Rog did comment on these on the mainpage but noted the reason he and his other gymnasts didn't do them last year at the Norcal Qualifiers was because the rings were set too low.

The standard CF kipping MU is already front uprise-ish with the horizontal pull, pike at hips and push to support.

The kipping muscle-up (or whatever you'd like to call it) certainly does not require a false grip, and I'm not sure how anyone could "butterfly muscle-up" with one.

Peh. At least he broke the 2 min mark.

And had some decent form + technique at least in the beginning. Although cutting short the swing to uprise is quicker it takes more energy to do...

This is why it becomes absurd though. 1 uprise is nothing like 1 MU.

C'mon Steven...you could come up with a whole list of absurdities.

A simple one being that only current or ex-gymnasts are likely to ever even attempt that workout.

A better one being that doing a "workout" is traditionally seen as engaging in exercise that'll create some sort of positive adaptation - either better strength, speed, body composition, cardiovascular health, coordination, etc. From the looks of it, flailing around for two minutes doesn't do anything except give a very mild boost in the heart rate and metabolism, for a very short duration, making it hardly a "workout" at all. That's not even mentioning the inordinately large risk of injury...
