i recently started trying out a wider stance during my first pull of the snatch. here are my experiences. i was wondering if anyone could comment on this and offer opinions as to which may be more preferable

what i used to do:
feet under hips
hips above knees
knees don't touch arms
*i can power snatch more, but 3rd pull is less controlled and less precise

what i'm trying out:
feet almost at my squat stance, under my shoulders
hips below knees
knees touch arms
*less powerful jump, but 3rd pull feels much better, i'm guessing because the torso forward inclination doesn't have to deviate as much during the various parts of the lift.

and because of the lower hip position, i feel like i can't rip the weight off the floor as fast, and subsequently i feel like my 1st and 2nd pull aren't as violent as i'd like it to be.

but the third pull just feels so much better!

I'd like a video to see a comparison between both your snatches, just to really see what's going on.

i don't have a video camera, but the gist of what the wider stance allow is for me to have a more erect torso, and it looks more like a squat than a deadlift.

i guess this might be confusing cause people with different proportions experience these things differently ...

You shouldn't be ripping the weight off the floor

Daniel -

Sounds like you're just trying to accelerate the bar too much too soon, and likely blowing right past the important positions higher up. Take your time and make sure you're getting into the correct position at mid-thigh/top of the thigh - that's where the real acceleration should be. Eventually that first pull can be more forceful, but there's no point if your second pull positions aren't sound.

thanks for the feedback! i had trouble with fully extending at the end of the second pull so i had been previously practicing power snatches just to emphasize extension with less emphasis on positioning hence the "ripping" off of the floor. i have since moved back to practicing positioning in 1st and 2nd pull.

i guess what i really want is a comparison between
wide stance/more erect torso <----> narrow stance/less erect torso in the first pull

from watching lifting videos on youtube i feel as if the progression of the whole lift has a different look and feel to it depending on where the lifter lies along that spectrum of wider or narrower foot placement.

...and it also feels very different to me when i experiment with foot placement.

i'd like to gauge the advantages/disadvantages so that i can decide what to stick with and continue to train that way

I encourage a more upright torso - but that doesn't require a wider stance.

And a ppower snatch should be no different than a snatch - so you shouldn't be ripping that off the floor either.
