View Full Version : Strongish beginner - Questions!

Hey guys -

First time posting!

I'm looking for some guidance, as a coachless lifter. I just finished my first week with the 4 week leg strength emphasis cycle, and wanted to make sure I wasn't barking up the wrong tree.

Here's my story, as short as I can make it - I've been doing powerlifting style lifting for the past couple years, and a few months ago, I decided to transition to the Olympic lifts. I spent about 6 weeks with a coach, being taught the lifts, but all the while continuing to squat, deadlift, and press heavy; I ran the Hatch squat program starting from week 6, and took my high-bar squat from 350 to 400 in 4 weeks.

Then I hurt my knee - probably an overuse injury, best characterized as patellar tendinitis.

I let it heal for about 2 months, and now I'm back training heavy.

Here are my stats, with "()" indicating pre-injury:

Age: 27
Weight: 205 (215)
Height: 5'10"
Squat: 330 (400)
Deadlift: 420 (470)
Power clean: 245 (270)
Snatch: 160ish (same)
Clean and Jerk: 225 (same - jerk is the limiting factor here)

My technique is not horrid, but I need lots and lots of reps. Thankfully, though, I have excellent mobility for the sport, especially in the shoulders.

Basically, I chose to run the length strength emphasis cycle posted on this site for 2 reasons: 1) it seemed to keep the classic lifts light, so I could focus on technique, and 2) it would allow me to get back my former leg strength.

My questions are:

1) Is the program I'm on compatible with relatively new lifters, who's major limitation is technique?

2) Should I be worried about regaining my old pulling strength? I have a hard time shaking the feeling that I -need- to be deadlifting, especially since I'm so ineffecient with the classic lifts that it feels like they're not stimulus enough to maintain or improve my strength levels.

1) I'm not sure which cycle you mean by "length strength emphasis cycle."

2) Do you mean LOSING your old pulling strength? You said yourself you chose that program so you could get back your former leg strength so I'm sure you will be fine.

If your weakness is technique, work on your technique. No one is stopping you from deadlifting but I would limit it to Clean/Snatch DLs.
