Anyone have any advise on crappy days in the gym? I was missing 75-85% of my snatch and clean and jerk left and right today. My bs 1rm is 400# and I was struggling with sets of three at 295. I don't know what was going on I just didn't feel strong like I usually do. Should we push through on days like this, or just accept that its a shitty day, do what ya can and live to lift another day?

Pretty disappointed in myself after this mornings session

You have to start looking at what could be possibly affecting you outside the gym. Are you getting enough sleep? How have you been eating lately? Any nagging injuries? Do you have stress at work or home? When was the last time you had a deload week, or simply rested? During these times, you have to listen to your body. Training programs are great and be structured perfectly, but they don't take into account the external stresses that can negatively impact our training. They're designed for professional athletes who support their families by lifting -- we're the complete opposite. Therefore, if the day calls for 85% triples on the front squat and you feel you can only get to 70%, then so be it. You're body is telling you that it needs a break from lifting because of something. Don't beat yourself up over it; instead, reflect on it and do what you can, both in the training room and in life's other areas, and you'll see that you're going to bounce back even stronger.

This is a great topic. We all have bad days. As Javier stated, if this is a reoccurring issue for you then you should evaluate your life outside of training (ie. recovery, stress and habits).

You mentioned you trained in the morning. Personally, I don't like to train in the morning unless I have to. I feel lethargic and slow. So I avoid it. Find what works best for you in this case.

Personally, I believe if you have a bad day, you should focus and fight through. Since, the snatch is the more elusive of the movements, this will require the most amount of focus, tension and awareness. Or maybe for you it's the C&J. It's individualized in this case. And then you have the squats, pulls and the like. This is where you have no excuses. If you are having a horrible day, this is where you make up for it.

Having trouble with 295# for triples? There are ladies warming up with that weight somewhere in the world right now, so sack up Sally. This is weightlifting. This is part of what makes it so challenging, yet fun. So don't be so down on yourself, everyday will be different, and it's part of the journey.

I agree with Javi. Days like this are going to come up. And they are usually at times when you would least expect it to happen.

I wouldn't say just shut it down and go home. Fight through what you can but if you just can't push anymore then drop the weight down, get your reps in and make a note of it in your training log.

If you're feeling like crap the rest of the week then you're probably just in need of a deload week.
