Just Starting Starting Strength
 
I just tried my first day of starting strength today. I think I nearly tore my glutes or something when I was trying to find the right weight to use. I work out alone so I used a stand/machine for the squats. I feel like my form is not how it should be. Any tips from those of you who have tried SS or just know how to lift weights?

1 - best to start with lower weights than you expect, particularly with squats as you increase flexibility to find the proper depth
2 - Is the "stand/machine" a Smith machine?
3 - Good coaching is very helpful at first.
4 - Post video.

If you're using a machine, stop it. Learn how to squat first. Post a video here, post videos on Rip's site, read the book a second time.

Like Arien said, if your flexibility sucks and you're new to strength training, keep the weights real low. May need to just go with the weight of the bar for a bit to figure things out. Better to start nice and easy than to screw something up.

Yeah I used a smith machine with the bar plus forty pounds to do (3x5). I strained myself when I tried to squat the bar+60lbs.

As has been said, Stop using the smith machine! Post a video of your form if you are concerned.

Only use a smith machine if you like the idea of blowing out your knees..

Haha no thanks. I'll just do 3 sets with the bar only and work on my form tomorrow. Should I workout if I'm still sore though?

If sore is DOMS (general muscle soreness), yes.

And dont underestimate the cool down, especially if youre new to lifting and doing new moves.

If youre lifting at the gym, you may be able to find someone or a trainer to help ya out.
