Hooves proved better than feet for completing today’s annual Man versus Horse Marathon on soggy ground.

More than 600 competitors raced across the 22-mile course in Llanwrtyd Wells, mid Wales, but it was one of the 49 horses that was first past the finishing line.

Duke’s Touch of Fun, ridden by Geoff Allen, from Budeleigh, Worcestershire, completed the marathon in two hours and nine minutes.

The fastest human competitor, who was eight minutes behind, was Mark Cox, a running club member from Salford.

Lindsay Ketteringham, chairman of Green Events which organises the endurance event, said: “It’s been a brilliant day, but the rain over the last couple of weeks meant the ground was soft underfoot and the horses were able to get quite a speed up. It was ideal going for the horses."

Is this race unique or does anyone know of anything similar?

do the men normally win or something? this doesn't seem like a whole lotta news. the fact that the one guy was 8 minutes behind sounds intense to me, but still it just makes me think "elephants beat men in bigger mammal contest."

It started as a pub bet. Who would win? Man or horse? The riders dominated for ages before a Royal Marine who trained specifically for the event put one back over the animal kingdom a few years ago by winning. The humans get a head start.

They've also introduced mountain bikers of late and they tend to win hands down but don't get taken as seriously.

The ex did this once in one of her many slightly crazy athletic endeavours.

PS I appreciate this is late, hadn't seen it before.

Darryl, do a search on the Western States 100...it started as a horse race, a guy got permission to enter about 25 years ago, eventualy they separated the races but it was both humn/equine for awhile as I recall.
