Cod Liver Oil dosage and Vit A
I am 6'2 215 pounds and doing the WOD from Crossfit Santa Cruz Central. I am upping my intake of EPA/DHA to 10 grams a day fro about 3. I currently use Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil, partially because they sell the large bottle of this where I shop and I will have to order the large bottles of Fish Oil. Will the vitamin A be a problem, should I split between CLO and fish oil and last time I upped my dosage I stopped because my said she could see lipid in my urine...does this mean I am taking too much? Thanks for the help!

According to the Manual of Dietetic Practice you only need ~0.5-1.8g epa + dha/d so 10g/d seems rather excessive. It's probably best if you listen to your doctor on this one.

10,000iu of preformed vitamin A per day should be fine.

Robb Wolf recommends .5g/10 lbs of EPA+DHA if you want to follow those guidelines.
That is, of course, if you are not eating a lot of oily fish in your diet. And/or other omega 3 fortified foods. |
If you take high doses of fish oil, just hope you don't ever get in a bloody accident...you may not make it.
I had a friend who was doing really high doses of fish oil (15g/day), a *tiny* nick on his finger resulted in a bloody mess all over his sink. He stopped right after that. |
Yeah, I did ~7-8g/day then I got a blood nose that kept leaking plasma for half an hour.
Cut down to ~4-5g/day |
