Avoid the Lazy Chest
The last few weeks I have noticed that when executing my lever training, I was allowing my chest to "get lazy". When this "lazy chest" occurred during the back lever, it was simply a matter of not pulling my arms hard enough into my sides, this caused my back lever to look extremely sloppy when I analyzed it on video. When it occurred during my front lever training, the "lazy chest" was caused by not pressing down hard enough on the rings.
I believe this "lazy chest" occurred just from getting comfortable enough with the levers. When correcting the "lazy chest" i feel not only stronger in my levers, but the look way nicer on video. I strongly recommend that everyone try and video themselves every few weeks just to prevent little things like this happening and throwing off your form, and to ensure that one is achieving the proper depth.
I hope this helps out anyone wishing to pursue bodyweight training. As it is my primary training protocol and have never enjoyed anything more.

Yep,..... body positions and holding it are often at least half of the exercise in question because if you lose proper body position it tends to make the exercises easier in most cases (and harder in others such as this one).

So yeah, know your body positions. Hit them.

Every so often, a tuck back lever makes me gasp for breath. Is this related? Or is that more hand positioning... I always assumed it just meant my hands were too close together on the bar...

Probably too close.

They should be shoulder width apart.

Also, if you're doing it on bar you should be supinated when grabbing it like a chinup so that your palms face backwards (e.g. proper) when you move through them.
