Rowing Substitute

Any suggestions for a good substitute for rowing?

Take a barbell and do a deadlift into a high-pull. You could also do the same thing with a KB or a DB.

That makes sense, thank you. I should have asked this in the OP, but how many reps do you think would equal a meter?

If you're talking about rowing on an ergometer, there is no substitute. Running or cycling are your best bets for an alternative monostructural activity.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I'm doing the Strength Development Cycle and there are some days that call for a 300 m row. I'll just pass on those day because running is out of the question. I'm a shitty runner and my shins kill afterwards. I'll just play some basketball with my son :).

The barbell to a DL to a high pull seemed to make sense as its a similar motion to a rowing machine. Hmm.

Thanks again

There's no way to measure rowing distance doing that exercise. If its something you're doing at home and you have a bicycle I would try cycling like Greg suggested for 300 meters.

The barbell deal is a good simulation of the movement, but even with the lightest implement (e.g. pvc pipe), each "stroke" would be way more taxing than the rower equivalent and therefore wouldn't have the same effect.
