Finishing up a strength cycle this week and then jumping into the 3-week Bulgarian program in Greg's Olympic Weightlifting book as a sort of taper for the strength cycle.
I've never done a Bulgarian cycle before and though I understand the concept, the question that I want to pose is when maxing for the day on whichever given day, what rule of thumb would you follow in your session? In other words would you go for only having three misses in total as you are building up to the max for the day on any given lift/attempt. Or would you continue to climb up in numbers and once you begin to see your technique getting hindered would you stop and say that is your max for the day?
Anyone with experience in a Bulgarian cycle I would appreciate your input.
My rule of thumb is just to go by feel. I wouldn't stop if the technique is getting hindered only because the weight is a high percentage. If you keep making the reps, then keep going up.
If you miss a max attempt but it's just a slight technical issue then you'll be okay to try it again, or even two more times if needed. If you miss a max attempt because it's too heavy then you may want to rethink attempting that weight again. For example, almost dropping the bar on your head in a maximum snatch attempt.
