Default split-jerk with back leg to the side?

My understanding is that generally you want that back leg to go back parallel to your body, but for some reason I am having troubles extending it back when going heavier. I have seen some high level lifters like ilya split that back leg more outwards. I am thinking this may help me get that back foot further back. Is that ok is that a defective technique?

Some lifters' split position will differ from other no matter what level. It's more of a comfort thing although all lifters do need to have some width in there split for lateral stability.

So I wouldn't call it defective. Find a stable split position, whether that be a little bit wider or not. Then I would have you work on just footwork drills (starting in your "jump" position and just quickly splitting out to the split position). Make sure you hold the split position for 2-3 seconds so you can get a good feel for how you're going to finish.

You should get consistency through repetitions.
