It would be a good idea. There is a guy in Chicago that started a hands-off book exchange. He stole a newspaper dispenser and repainted it, took the lock off, etc. He loaded it with books he didn't want and put a "take a book, leave a book" sign on it. You can take without leaving, you can leave without taking. It has become self-sustaining remaining stocked with all kinds of books.

The problem we run into with this setup is having to pay for shipping, but we'd be paying for shipping anyway through Amazon. It's a rare treat to find the book you're looking for in a brick-and-mortar.

There's a lending library on another board I'm on. Some books and videos are donated and become property of the board--those you can keep until someone else wants to read them--and some belong to individuals who choose how long you can have the book for and who pays for shipping. I've taken to trading books with some dude who always adds dehydrated veggies from his garden, and I send him all kinds of salves and bath salts and things. It's actually really fun, and I've found that everyone always underlines the same parts I would have.
