I think a lot of people misunderstand this and revel in the whole endurance athletes are weak and sickly theory. Running a couple of miles is not training for an ultramarathon. I also think people misunderstand Ross who simply countered the doing things at one slow pace all the time method. Perhaps I'm wrong but he advocates periodisation, varied intensities and adequate rest. So many people have decided it has to be all out, all of the time, in effect going to the opposite extreme.

Slightly off topic but I'm interested how you vary things with your rugby girls Shaf.

Thanks Donald. You've got more patience than me if I understand Joel's stuff correctly. I find HR monitor work very dull. I must get around to buying the book though.

I'll make a detailed post about this somewhere else (rugby girls) as I am changing some things around this year to attempt to address some of the injury issues I had last year (too many concussions).

In continuing the rugby threadjack, the one thing I hated most was roadwork. But, as a center, it was a necessary evil. The best idea I ever had was taking a ball with me on my runs. That way I could visualize squashing the poor bastards coming my direction. Of course, if you end up with a good view, you can slow down the pace and practice switching hands for a few hundred meters.
