That Sucks!
I'm going to assume that your crossfit hate tank is now officially refilled. I hope your friend recovers well.

The Glassman WODs weren't great, but they were about a million times better than the stuff that gets posted nowadays, most of which is simply GIGO in movement format.

I don't know but...
Maybe a class action lawsuit would be effective. I'm guessing if the lawyers got a group of people together to testify against them they would have a case. The problem is that crossfit spends a good deal of time convincing people to scale and whatnot, but the exercises are only safe when you scale. The reality is that nearly all the WODs are dangerously unchecked and this is what all of the crossfitters aspire to. They aspire to have the ability to complete a very dangerous exercise routine at a very high rate of speed. This is about equal to cutting wood on a saw for time. You can make your new deck by taking your time and making sure everything is cut properly (quality work), or you can go as fast as you possibly can and end up chopping your damn hand off (crossfit). I'm not saying that there never a time to go fast, its just usually not smart to go "elite" speed during the weird mix and match exercises that crossfit provides. I believe the way crossfit protects itself is the same way the alcohol and tobacco companies do. If you chose to do something thats this dangerous for you its your fault...I disagree but I bet this is how they get away with everything. I expect to see a surgeon general warning about crossfit someday.

From my Orthos point of view, the outlook on what I will be able to do looks pretty limited. For example, "no, you won't ever be able to do box jumps again without risking an irreparable achilles if you were to have another full rupture. No Plyometrics!”

Looks like we've found the lower body SLAP tear.

Im glad that everything got better! These storied about how you and others make me realize I will be able to crossfit sooner then i think.. I only have a partial tear... or so they think. I was doing box jumps and felt it reallllll good on one landing. Stupid thing was I love box jumps so much I kept going... to the point I couldnt stand the pain anymore. went to the doc last week he thought heel contrusion well now a week later the pain is worse and along my achillies... all the symptoms they say directs to a tear but being in iraq we have no capabilities to do an MRI.... so now im on crutches with a supports brace and waiting out my next three weeks until I go back home and can get an MRI or crossfit again.

I completely tore mine November 2010. Now, 4 months post-op resuming with deadlifts, squats, cleans, etc. Still not cleared to run, jump or row. This is one of the worst injuries. Mine completely blew out during a double-under session. One month prior, I had fallen off a pull-up ladder doing flying pull-ups. At that time, I didn't realize I had caused severe damage. I should have went to the Ortho but kept on going. Now I am paying the price for pushing through the initial pain. Bottom line here is get it checked if you have pain and if you do blow-out, your recovery is slow, painful and a burden to everything and everyone.

I did sit on the couch for 5-6 weeks before I did anything.....I have shoulder issues and my achilles surgery site was extremely painful for about one week in almost any position and for 2-3 weeks after it was very painful to be lower the rest of my body. Lots of pain killers, movies and easy reading books for me. I slept a lot. I pretty much did nothing until rehab given the double injury.

Yeah, those posts goign months and months back are referring to lots of old injuries, but at least four from this one Games workout. It really is quite terrible. People should think long and hard about what they're doing before they engage in "extreme" competitions.
EDITED to be better.

It's official... I'm part of the rupture club as of yesterday! I'm going to have the most awesome bedazzled boot ever! Can't wait to start the boot workouts in 2 weeks or so.

Achilles Rupture
This is the first traumatic injury I've ever had. Happened on Sunday redoing the 2nd Sectionals WOD. I was at 11+27 with a 50 seconds to go when it blew out. I frantically looked behind me to see who had hit me, and then realized it had ruptured.
I have a meeting with an orthopedic surgeon tomorrow and will get surgery as soon as possible.
I have some thinking to do about what I want and what's important to me.

Let’s send our support to our very own Coach Nathan. During the sectional wod 11.2, he ruptured his achilles tendon. He is an awesome athlete and a great inspiration to many of us. We are a team and he is a major part of our success. Please take the time to send your prayers for a speedy recovery his way. P.s. send veggies not cookies….

From the top of my head, back when I studying up on Verks work (creator of depth jump), there's a hierarchy of special exercises that leads into boxjumps/depthjumps use, to prepare the muscles and tendons for the shock method. the minimum I think was 60cm at the start of the block training, but the rep scheme at first does not exceed 30 reps; and this is for elite, conditioned, olympic sport athletes. this is common S&C knowledge.
