IRONMIND..."Squats, dips and chins."?
I was reading an IRONMIND catalog recently and was interested to see that they recommend squats, dips and chins as the foundational movements for strength routines. Squats I get, but dips and chins? Why those over bench or deadlifts?
How does that philosophy sit with you guys?

Shrug.
I like dips and chins. Especially more than bench. But not more than deadlift.
All are pretty "functional" if I can use that term.
Plus, getting the numbers up on your weighted dips and chins will make you strong as hell in the upper body (in terms of being able to move weight and your body well).. based on my experience at least. Bench and rows are probably a good combination as well, but I don't think they're as great for proprioception (although bench is a better indicator of brute strength).

I'd guess it's because they can all be performed pretty safely so long as you're not a moron. They can also all be performed fairly regularly. Deads tap in too much and some of the others just aren't practical.

Weird.
I've never seen a person who only did chins and dips be particularly strong in overhead lifts but I have seen folks that only bench and squat that are c*&k diesel at all strength work.
Sounds a T-nation thread, "if you could only do one lift......."
Why would I want to only do three lifts? If I only had a big rock I can think of about twenty things I could do so why stop at squat chin dip?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't those 3 the foundational movements and not the be-all-end-all? They're all multi-joint, heavy etc.
When I was talking practical I was thinking power snatches and power cleans.

Your right I think...Just seems like mild shit stirring to me; poking all the PL guys who can press like BW and a half but fail on the second pull up.

Debating this is the 5% of results that take up 95% of people's time on the internet.
Lift heavy full body compound movements, eat, sleep...you will be stronger than 95% of the people out there.....who are too busy debating the extra 5% of which exercise or bulgarian-russian pyramidal scheme is best.

I understand...do workouts with the key exercises (rotate them if you must)....weighted dips, weighted pullups, DLs, Squats, Bench, Press, Clean....I can't think of any weak person who just focuses on those exercises alone.....
as Nike says....Just do it.

Ohhh, yeah. I can see that. 1.5 BW press is some sickness right there, cooler than 60 kipped pull ups if you ask me.
