As his fruit intake kept dropping, at each drop he would exhibit the commonly referred-to as "low blood sugar" symptoms that so many people have when going from a high-CHO diet to a low(er) one.
Basically, fruit is (much) better than processed carbs, but fruit doesn't get a free pass in my book.

I can personally attest to that. I can feel it if I eat a 1/4 apple but sometimes a girls just gotta have a fruit...far better to me than a piece of bread or cake but nonetheless, it does affect me!
