Default Cordain Misquote?


One dissenting opinion on beans in general that's worth mentioning comes from my respected colleague Loren Cordain, Ph.D., of The Paleo Diet and The Paleo Diet for Athletes fame. He's concerned about substances in beans called lectins. Lectins are a mixture of protein and carbohydrate that aren't digested and broken down and can bind with any tissue in the body, creating problems in susceptible people. So all beans and legumes are on Cordain's "avoid" list, along with grains.

I think Cordain is really smart, but I'm not sure I agree with all of his recommendations. Obviously, some people might have a problem with beans, but if you're not one of them, I think they're fine. (For what it's worth, eggs are also on Cordain's "avoid" list.)

Im not really diggin that Bowen guy...but i gotta say ive just dug out the pomegranate thats been sitting in my fridge for 2 weeks and eaten 1/4 of it!

It's been a while since I read The Paleo Diet but from what I recall I think he said you can eat them but try to limit the amount as well as try to get the omega-3 enriched type.

What about eggs? Eggs are a relatively high fat food (62% fat, 34% protein). Eating too many eggs can promote weight gain and increase blood cholesterol levels. There is no doubt that Paleolithic people woild have eaten wild birds eggs whenever they found them but this wasn't that often. Wild eggs would have been a seasonal food and would not have been eaten every day. Also, wild bird eggs are nutritionally different from domesticated chicken eggs; they have higher levels of beneficial omega 3 fat and lower levels of artery-clogging saturated fat. This means that you should limit consumption of eggs to six a week. You should also buy eggs enriched with omega 3 fats.

I thought saturated fats and cholesterol don't cause atherosclerosis

From what I know they don't.

Carbs and inflammation do... and too much LDL.
