It's been a while since I've been on the CF forums, but I know a number of people reported being less sore from doing a marathon after they started crossfit compared to when they were doing more distance without crossfit. Endurance work also tends to be fairly specific so there might not be a big carryover between running and rowing with hiking with a pack and ice climbing. Strength will also be more important for what you're doing than in something like a marathon.

As far as strength goes, you might want to give Starting Strength a try although you might be better off with only 2 days a week. When I was doing more endurance work I had better success with somewhat higher reps (maybe 5-10) and less sets than the other way around.

You can also try doing 30-60 minutes of endurance work immediately following a metcon.

You might want to check out the Gym Jones site. They do a lot of crossfit type stuff mixed with endurance mountain sports.

I've only begun touching the surface of endurance efforts in the past year, triathlons and cycling and what not. Mostly my backround is in MMA and strength training. But it seems to that if you cannot train your grip and pulling strength this close to such an event, than it doesnt matter what kind of recovery you get out of endurance efforts because you wont be able to recover from the stress put on that part of your body. www.mtnathlete.com as well as gymjones are really good places to look they deal directly with ice climbing, Rob from mtnathlete actually just started a really well designed program for a similar effort and posted all sorts of good articles on it. He built a cave in his gym and each pass done on is graded on a point system(w/feet or w/o feet.
Gym jones recently went private so you will have a more difficult time finding specifics on it.

I can give some anecdotal support for the metcon type workouts helping endurance and recovery. Each year my family spends a week up in Yosemite. I hike Half Dome every year. Before the last trip I had been doing all metcon (crossfit style) work for about eight months and ZERO classical endurance work.
None of my workouts were over 45 minutes and I worked out between three and six days a week. My time for the hike was somewhere around an hour faster than I had ever done it before. Most importantly, I was honestly not sore the next day or the day after that and I slept great that night. I realize that this is not a multi-day super hard event like is being discussed here, but it is about 8 hours of pretty much non-stop moving. In past years I was training for Triathlons and road cycling and mountain bike racing. Again, this past year was my strongest and fastest and most comfortable trip ever, and I felt like I could have done it again the next day. I am sold on the program. Take it for what it's worth...

Default Write to Mark Twight.

Try writting him. I once wrote a serious message i had put time into and i got a very very good and useful answer. Otherwise read all the articles at mntathlete as suggested he write tons of stuff about it. Are you focusing only on climbing (all training is focused on improving climbing performance) or do you have some other focus points?

Try reading his article Weekend Warrior he mentions the training template he follows.

Have you checked out CrossFit Endurance?? I'm not sure if someone has mentioned this already.

After many years of trying to convince my wife to the contrary we are running our first marathon later this year. She's been wanting to run one since before I met her.

I plan on utilizing the CF Endurance WOD's in lieu of a traditional marathon training program. The wife isn't too convinced and will be using a traditional approach. We'll see how long it takes her to scrap that and switch over.
