I read an article (don't have access to it now) that claimed the body can only use so much protein at a time. If this is correct, wouldn't it be over-doing it to drink whey with a protein-centered meal like if you were eating a steak or fish?

Protein intakes above 1.8 - 2g/kg/day are oxidised for energy. Most people in the western world eat more than that without really trying so protein supplements don't really help with hypertrophy except in the sense that they add extra calories to your diet. If you need a high energy diet it's far more effective (and cheaper) to increase portion sizes and eat healthy high calorie snacks between meals. A handfull of dried fruit and nuts for example can easily add an extra 600 kcals to your diet alternatively try adding plenty of honey to fruit smoothies.
