Default Quad Stretch Question

I had a random question last night and thought someone here might know the answer.

Since the quads are primarily responsible for knee extension, why do you need an open hip to feel the stretch in the quads? Does it have to do with the rectus femoris?

rectus femoris originates on the pelvis, that's part of it, plus lateralis is integrated with the IT band which also crosses the hip, there's also members of the adductor group( longus, brevis and gracilis et al) that cross the hip and are pretty tight to the femur, RF and VMO.
