Default Bench dimensions

So they guy that made my prowler is going to weld me up a flat bench. I know what I want for the frame dimensions. I just need a pad width. I was planning on using a 2x__ with carpet as a cover. So what do you think 8 or 10 inches wide? I would really like to make the Ironmind bench, but that might be excessive.

I surfed online but the width they showed was the base width.

Found a "How to build a wooden bench" site. It recommended using 2 (2x6s) side by side. So a 2x12? I would still appretiate anyone's input.
