Default Autoimmune Disorders

Hi there,

I've been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and it also looks like I've also got PSC (an inflammatory autoimmune condition of the Liver). I was just wondering if you have any dietry/supplement recommendations for people with autoimmune disorders.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

I would read this newsletter from Prof. Loren Cordain:
It describes the interplay of the EGF receptor and dietary lectins in autoimmune disease. I would also recommend reading the book Lights Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival.

Basic things that help inflammatory conditions:
1- Plenty of sleep.
2- Low glycemic load diet.
3- Adequate fish oil intake. Clear this with your physician and pharmacist if you are on ANY medication.

Thanks Robb,

Any views on whether I should be increasing protein intake or overall calories? I eat Zone at a 0.7 multiplier.

Also am I right in assuming that IF is out as my body is under chronic stress from the UC & PSC and any acute stress from IF would have the wrong effect?

The 0.70 multiplier is pretty nice in that you will be able to maintain muscle mass but you will not be subjecting your liver to an excessive ammonia load. If you already have inflammatory issues that is something to be avoided if at all possible IMO. Stick with alkalinizing fruits and veggies for the carbs and I think you have a potent tool for cooling an over active immune system.

Intermittent fasting sounds like it might be a bit much to take on. That said I would try sticking with ~4meals per day. This will allow some periods of time in which your liver and digestive system are not processing food and that alone can reduce inflammation. If you do attempt some therapeutic fasting make sure to bring your doctor into the process.
