Let's not all hop on the USSR sports science train. It worked very well for certain things, but poorly for others. You can look back at the gold medal comparisions throughout the Cold War to see where each sport was dominated.

Let's not forget the essence of it was "take a million athletes, throw them into the machine, and send the champion out to do battle."

This is how China's doing it, by the way. And it is only possible with state-sponsored athletes.

And finally, the sport scientists of the USSR had to produce, or they would not keep their comfortable positions, which means a whole lot of shit was made up to keep the gravy train going. You could even suggest that many of the scientific coaches made their bones off one genetically superior athlete and invented the system of their development afterwards.
