One description of a daily max is your max effort for the day without causing emotional stress (today) or recovery issues in the future. It means you need to be tuned into yourself enough to know that you can put up a certain amount of weight that won't destroy your recovery for the next three days but certainly acts as a positive stressor, a fun challenge, for your lifting today.
If the prescribed workout is 5 sets of singles, I wouldn't try for my competition 1RM and then attempt it 4 more times. Not happening, not because I wouldn't want it to happen but physically the bar is not going to move. Even if the prescribed weight is 'find daily max then take 80% of that', still don't shoot for that competition 1RM because 1) your 80% of that is still ridiculously heavy and 2) you have to recover from the researching of that 1RM and then do the prescribed sets.
What do you mean let's listen to "Viking metal"? Vikings didn't play heavy metal, they played bongos and flutes!
