Let me know if you're coming to class on Friday night

Shogun's BJJ was underrated in my opinion. He was known to be solid, but I saw some old training footage and he looked pretty slick for a guy who was as big as he is.

I will definitely be there. I pick up Laney at her gym at 7:45 so I get to stay and play.

Here is a little promo video with Shogun and Prof "Simpson" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU-TUGARZ60

That's a cool video. And here I am saying his BJJ "was" underrated and he "was known"... as if he's gone or something.

He's still a top 5 LHW in the UFC, maybe top 3... That was kind of messed up the way he kneed that dude at the end during sparring.

Ever hear the rumor about Wanderlei KO'ing Shogun in sparring like 5 or 6 years ago, during the Pride glory days?

Inspiration for pan-ams. Tap your inner Marcelo Garcia. The speed he chokes a guy like Shaolin out is insane. Unconscious.

That was amazing. I haven't seen that fight. Marcelo Garcia films every single class he teaches and then publishes the video online for his subscribers. He also rolls with everyone who visits. He is really a stand out in the BJJ world as he keeps no secrets about his training and still goes in and crushes the competition.

I've heard good things about him back when I was kind of into this stuff.

Him publishing his classes online and being upfront about his training reminds me of Nick Nolte in "Blue Chips"
"It doesn't matter what ya do. IT'S HOW YOU DO IT!!!"

I'm a movie dork.

19 August 2011 Friday

Got home at 3:00 AM after an absolutely brutal set of flight delays from DC. Had meetings first thing in the morning so a couple of hours of sleep, shower and zone bar and off I go.

BJJ Competition Class: Pretty neat in that it turned into open mat and we got to work on some really cool stuff with Prof Raphael and Prof Marcio. Main things I took away were better positioning on the brabo choke from anywhere and 3 different ways to do the punch pass from half guard. Rolled a lot with one of my buddies who is coming back from a knee injury and finished off with a little work with Chile. He absolutely crushed my knee in his half guard.

Really a good night for me. Feel like I learned a lot.

Surprising to have a good session after messed up travel; I'm always completely wiped.
