Default Minimum?

I started IF last week and I am fasting from 5pm till 8am. Is there a minimum time scale that I should aim to keep this going?

Should I try and do this everyday, somedays, or as long as possible?

Well...I really do not know. The experiments done with animals so far have involved a eat one day, fast one day cycle that lasted the entire life of the animals. Whether or not this is optimal is a complete mystery at this point. It would be interesting if someone looked at an experiment in which the animals eat 2 days and then fast the 3rd. What happens then? Do we get all, some or none of the benefits? I know this is not answering your question very well but this is all very speculative. Something to keep in mind here is that more important than the intermittent fast itself is the hormonal and gene expression profile we create. We are interested in generating some specific biomarkers such as beta-hydroxy-butyrate (a ketone body). A few people have found low to medium levels of ketone bodies in their urine (tested with Ketostix) while following IF. And this ketosis is happening while there is adequate carbohydrate intake to prevent ketosis, so there are some interesting mechanisms at play here. I apologize for the answer that will not die, but here are a few guidelines that may help: 1-Do what seems livable. This plan should enhance and simplify your life not complicate it. 2-You should feel and perform better. If your food intake is adequate and you are training hard you should remain lean, performance should improve and you may add some muscle. 3-Check for Ketone bodies. This is recommended with reservation as it may or may not tell you are doing things correctly. 4-Do not be afraid to shake things up. More food one day, perhaps less food another day. Until we have some more information it seems silly to adhere to rigidly to these guidelines. Let me know if this helps or made things worse!!

I'm eating between 12:00 pm and 6 pm - generally 3 large meals, the middle one post-workout and having more high GI/II carbs.
