Default Should a begginner do powerlifts for strength?

Hello,

Should a beginner to strength training who wants to specialize in Olympic Weightlifting do the Overhead Press, the Bench Press and the Deadlift? Or would all the slow traction of the Powerlifts interfere with the explosiveness the Oly lifts require, even if you're someone who lacks a strength base?

Thanks in advance!

The most important thing about any beginner lifter is making sure they are hitting the correct positions. As in, they need to teach the body how to move correctly ("muscle memory").

Should they be doing those exact exercises? I'm not against that. The only requirement I would have for you is that for DLs, do a Snatch/Clean DL. Not a Sumo DL or any other kind of traditional DL as seen in the sport of Powerlifting.

You can take a look at our programs we have on this website to get an idea of some exercises we do. Also Greg has put out a book and a Multimedia Quickstart Guide with tons of great information for beginners along with more programs you can try.

I think beginner should do the Weightlifting with the proper consult of a Experienced Trainer , Otherwise there is enough chance to get injuries.
