While I agree that structuring training is very important to success, I would like to point out some exceptions. To me, Chris Sharma stands out as a major exception. He is arguably the most accomplished rock climber alive, but he claims that he has no real schedule to his pursuits.
Also, an overly rigid plan leaves little room for an instinctive relaxation or intensification of efforts.
That being said, I do plan my workouts out for five weeks at a time, in conjunction with my strength coach, and I believe that I am seeing good results. This period of time allows me to use the knowledge developed during the workouts to inform my coach of my progress, but also allows me some flexibility to pursue interesting avenues or to train weaknesses that I identify during the course of the five weeks.
