Greg - I'm pretty new to the oly lifts and been following your current cycle. I understand the depth of the catch should be relative to the weight on the bar. My question is...
When we have a workout like this from Wed...
• Snatch - 60% x 1 x 5 OTM
• CJ - 60% x 1 x 5 OTM
Since the weight is relatively light (being a beginner), do we catch it as high as possible then lower down into the squat OR do we try to catch it at the bottom of the squat to work on technique? Regardless of whether or not a power snatch/cj is prescribed.

As described in today's post, since it is light, you'll should be receiving it relatively high, but because they're not power lifts, you should be smoothly continuing down into a squat.

That's what I had gathered from your post. Just confirming. Great post.

Hey Greg,
Can you argue that catching the weight at the bottom will make your core stronger?
But what you are saying is that even on a max lift you should receive the bar before you hit the bottom of your squat?
I'm thinking about this more with the snatch.
And thank you for the post, awesome info.

George -
Yes you can, but it's the same argument as saying that it's better core work to have someone drop a loaded barbell on your shoulders in the bottom position rather than squatting it - it may require a lot of core stabilization, but there's also no reason to do it and quite a few not to. Why would you receive the bar anywhere than where it is?
