Cramps from WL belt?
I recently bought a WL belt and started training with my local Oly Lifting club. I have noticed that after lifting - usually the next day - I get some pretty gnarly abdominal cramping. Is this normal during the process of getting used to the belt? Might I be wearing it too much? I loosen it between lifts, but I have put many of those lifts up for years prior to owning a belt...I bought one in past because I don't want to end up with a back injury. I've had enough with injuries these past few years! I'm going for prevention now.

That could be from an abdominal weakness because your abs are working extra hard to push against that belt so that you can maintain a flat back and good posture in the torso.

I would try not to wear the belt as much; maybe only when you get up to 80% or so. Also, it may be a little too tight causing your muscles to strain even more when trying to contract.

Just some thoughts. But definitely do some core work to keep your torso strong so you're not relying completely on the belt to achieve good positioning.

You may also be over-tightening the belt. I like to cinch it down just slightly inside my beltless braced circumference. IE brace your abs as usual, then tighten the belt down to squeeze that position just a bit.

Will give that a try Greg.

Re: Blake - I have pretty strong abs, but one thing I hadn't considered until I read your reply was that I had abdominal surgery 5 years ago and was told my abs would never be as strong as they once were. I can tell in the area where I was cut that the abs definitely aren't as strong as the areas that weren't cut into.

Thanks to both of you!
