Dumb Weightlifting Questions
Greg Everett
October 17 2012
General
It was suggested to me by our talented editor Yael that I write an article about “dumb” weightlifting questions. I turned to the internet’s leading repositories of dumb questions—Facebook and Twitter—for some ideas. The following are some of the better ones you provided me. She told me my answers were obnoxious and unhelpful so I'll be doing a real version in the Performance Menu next month, but I figured these shouldn't go to waste. Please note that none of these a...

I'm very excited to announce that Bob Takano's new book, Weightlifting Programming: A Winning Coach's Guide, is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com.
For a systematic approach to designing programming for competitive weightlifters, there is nothing better in the English language than this book. All coaches, from beginning to experienced, should have this book on their shelves.

Chapter 1: The Problem, The Dilemma

Reader Request- About Wraps, Belts, And Straps
Matt Foreman
October 15 2012
Weightlifting
One of our readers contacted Greg recently and asked if we would put up a blog post about the use of equipment for Olympic lifters. Specifically, the question was about belts, straps, wrist/knee wraps, etc. This is a pretty good example of why you guys should feel free to contact us when you have topics you want to read about. I actually wrote something about this exact topic several months ago, but I never posted it because I thought, “Nobody will be interested in this because it’s ...

The Power Jerk: Yes, It Has Uses
Greg Everett
October 10 2012
Quick Tips
I've always hated power jerks, like most people who split jerk as their prefered jerk method. It's awkward, uncomfortable and difficult. But I have a grudging respect and appreciation for the exercise because it can be immensely valuable as a training exercise for split jerkers. The power jerk forces a solid, strong dip and strong drive, and possibly more importantly, a balanced and correctly oriented drive. With the split jerk, a lifter can get away with a certain amount of imbalance or forward...

A Quick Thought About Coaching People Who Think They Suck
Matt Foreman
October 10 2012
Weightlifting
Several years ago, I was hanging out in the warm-up room at a meet, chatting with a guy who was a two-time Olympian. Neither of us were competing in this contest, so we were just relaxing backstage and watching the other lifters get ready. One of the athletes warming up was a relatively new guy who trained with the Olympian dude I was talking to. Here is the conversation we had:
Me (pointing at the new guy as he warmed up): “That guy trains with you, right?”
Two-time Olympian: ...

Stop And Smell The Chalk
Mike Gray

Weightlifting
Those of you who are reading this are probably now or have been in your life pretty passionate about Olympic lifting. I want you to stop and think about this chapter in your life; for some it will be quick and for others it might very well be a lifetime.
We have all at one time hated and or loved it for myriad reasons. Those days when you feel like absolute crap and getting out of bed is a freaking chore, driving to the gym and you hit every bit of traffic in the city and warming up feels lik...

Use Your Legs
Steve Pan
October 3 2012
Quick Tips
Every now and then an athlete will have a flash of insight that will improve their game from that point on. In hindsight they are always the most obvious pieces of information but never hit home.
During my first squat cycle Greg had made a comment to me about using my legs for squats as a joke. As he said it that lightning bolt of information hit the tip of my brain and everything made sense to me as I exclaimed, “OH! I just realized that I have to use my legs to squat.”
I ha...

10 Things New Women Weightlifters Should Know
Aimee Anaya Everett
October 1 2012
Weightlifting
1. Lift with other girls. Lifting with men is motivating; however, they just don’t understand certain things. Such as why we act crazy in the gym. Only girls can understand why you have to turn up Fergalicious or Beat It on Pandora to pump you up and/or have you break out in your PR dance. I think other girls, especially those who you have built a strong friendship with and have a sense of loyalty to, will keep you motivated even on the worst of days, and be smiling and cheering with you o...

A Letter To Catalyst Athletics (and Everybody Else)
Matt Foreman
September 24 2012
Weightlifting
Do you ever get embarrassed when you think about some of the stupid things you said when you were younger? I think we all probably do. We remember some idiotic comments we made, things we knew we shouldn’t have said out loud, and we wonder how our heads ever got jammed so far up our butts. I cringe sometimes when I think about stuff that came out of my mouth when I was in my twenties.
Over the years, I’ve changed a lot. That’s normal, I guess. We all grow up and mature, and...

Snatch And Clean Extension: Be Patient
Greg Everett
September 17 2012
Quick Tips
A big mistake with the snatch and clean is trying to initiate the final explosion too soon. This can create a list of problems, including shifting your balance too far forward, pushing the bar away from your body, preventing a complete extension of the hips, and limiting the speed and height of the bar. Bring the barbell back into your body as it leaves the floor, and continue using the lats to push it back into the hips - not near the hips, but actually into the hips. If the barbell never touch...
