How To Coach Women, Matt Foreman
How To Coach Women
Matt Foreman  |  November 6 2012  |  Weightlifting
Okay, does anybody want some useful little tidbits about coaching women? I hope so, because I’ve got plenty of them. And before you start flinching, this isn’t designed to be one of my sarcastic funny posts. I’ve actually got legit things to say about this. First of all, you have to start with the basic outlook that what the ladies are doing is just as important as what the men are doing, and it deserves the same level of respect. I think we all know that sports have histor......
Screw Nutrition, Matt Foreman
Screw Nutrition
Matt Foreman  |  October 25 2012  |  Weightlifting
I have almost nothing helpful to say about nutrition. Everybody who reads this probably knows more about it than I do. My study of it pretty much stopped after a class I took my freshman year in college. I did well in the class, though. The professor made copies of an essay I wrote and gave them to the rest of the class…told them I had a “heightened understanding” of how to eat for performance. I didn’t tell her I was eating Oatmeal Crème Pies when I wrote it. ......

Reader Request- About Wraps, Belts, and Straps
Matt Foreman  |  October 15 2012  |  Weightlifting
One of our readers contacted Greg recently and asked if we would put up a blog post about the use of equipment for Olympic lifters. Specifically, the question was about belts, straps, wrist/knee wraps, etc. This is a pretty good example of why you guys should feel free to contact us when you have topics you want to read about. I actually wrote something about this exact topic several months ago, but I never posted it because I thought, “Nobody will be interested in this because it’s ......
A Quick Thought About Coaching People Who Think They Suck, Matt Foreman
A Quick Thought About Coaching People Who Think They Suck
Matt Foreman  |  October 10 2012  |  Weightlifting
Several years ago, I was hanging out in the warm-up room at a meet, chatting with a guy who was a two-time Olympian. Neither of us were competing in this contest, so we were just relaxing backstage and watching the other lifters get ready. One of the athletes warming up was a relatively new guy who trained with the Olympian dude I was talking to. Here is the conversation we had: Me (pointing at the new guy as he warmed up): “That guy trains with you, right?” Two-time Olympian: ......

A Letter to Catalyst Athletics (and everybody else)
Matt Foreman  |  September 24 2012  |  Weightlifting
Do you ever get embarrassed when you think about some of the stupid things you said when you were younger? I think we all probably do. We remember some idiotic comments we made, things we knew we shouldn’t have said out loud, and we wonder how our heads ever got jammed so far up our butts. I cringe sometimes when I think about stuff that came out of my mouth when I was in my twenties. Over the years, I’ve changed a lot. That’s normal, I guess. We all grow up and mature, and......
Competition Anxiety...It Never Goes Away, Matt Foreman
Competition Anxiety...It Never Goes Away
Matt Foreman  |  September 10 2012  |  Weightlifting
You’re a weightlifter at a national championship. It’s the night before you compete, and you’re alone in your hotel room. These are the thoughts that go through your mind. __________________________ I wish I had my own room. I would totally get my own room if I had any money. I have to room with four of my teammates, and they all competed already because they’re in the lighter weight classes and those go first at nationals. So now they’re out looking for drinks an......
Keeping Your Gym Environment Strong, Matt Foreman
Keeping Your Gym Environment Strong
Matt Foreman  |  August 27 2012  |  Weightlifting
When you’re a coach, one of your responsibilities is protecting your gym’s mojo. What the heck am I talking about? Let me explain. First, we have to understand what “mojo” is. The mojo in your gym is a collective feeling of teamwork, enthusiasm, positive energy, and work ethic. Some gyms have incredibly strong mojo. You can see it when you’ve trained in one of these places for a little while. You look around and notice things. Everybody is training hard, locke......
Something We Learned At The Olympics, Matt Foreman
Something We Learned At The Olympics
Matt Foreman  |  August 13 2012  |  Weightlifting
Hopefully, you all got to watch a lot of weightlifting action at the Olympics over the last couple of weeks. NBCOlympics.com is like a gift from the heavens, showing complete replay coverage of every weight class. This is the first Olympics in my life when I’ve been able to see the entire competition. When I sit down at the computer to watch one of these replays, I practically go into a trance. The whole world just tunes out for a while. One of my cats could be on fire and I wouldn’t......
People Who Lift Weights...And Weightlifters, Matt Foreman
People Who Lift Weights...And Weightlifters
Matt Foreman  |  July 30 2012  |  Weightlifting
A few years ago, I wrote a Performance Menu article about the difference between two types of people: those who lift weights, and those who are weightlifters. You might not have read it because it’s pretty old and I didn’t include it in Bones of Iron. I wasn’t happy with the way it turned out, aside from the main idea which I thought was pretty good. So I’ll hit that idea again here. Maybe the whole thing will taste better if I just keep dumping more frosting on it. S......
Lifting for Revenge, Matt Foreman
Lifting for Revenge
Matt Foreman  |  July 17 2012  |  Weightlifting
Alternative teeny rock isn’t my number-one choice of music, but there are a few songs in the genre that I dig. One of them is “Misery Business” by the band Paramore. The lyrics were written by their lead singer, a little peach named Hayley Williams. The song is pretty simple, actually. A girl is gloating because she stole a boy away from another girl she hates like hell. She jacked this girl’s man, and she just loves the fact that the chick is suffering. I don’t hav......
