A Quick Thought About Coaching People Who Think They Suck
Matt Foreman
October 10 2012
Weightlifting
Several years ago, I was hanging out in the warm-up room at a meet, chatting with a guy who was a two-time Olympian. Neither of us were competing in this contest, so we were just relaxing backstage and watching the other lifters get ready. One of the athletes warming up was a relatively new guy who trained with the Olympian dude I was talking to. Here is the conversation we had:
Me (pointing at the new guy as he warmed up): “That guy trains with you, right?”
Two-time Olympian: ......

A Letter to Catalyst Athletics (and everybody else)

Weightlifting
Do you ever get embarrassed when you think about some of the stupid things you said when you were younger? I think we all probably do. We remember some idiotic comments we made, things we knew we shouldn’t have said out loud, and we wonder how our heads ever got jammed so far up our butts. I cringe sometimes when I think about stuff that came out of my mouth when I was in my twenties.
Over the years, I’ve changed a lot. That’s normal, I guess. We all grow up and mature, and......

Competition Anxiety...It Never Goes Away
Matt Foreman

Weightlifting
You’re a weightlifter at a national championship. It’s the night before you compete, and you’re alone in your hotel room. These are the thoughts that go through your mind.
__________________________
I wish I had my own room. I would totally get my own room if I had any money. I have to room with four of my teammates, and they all competed already because they’re in the lighter weight classes and those go first at nationals. So now they’re out looking for drinks an......

Keeping Your Gym Environment Strong
Matt Foreman

Weightlifting
When you’re a coach, one of your responsibilities is protecting your gym’s mojo.
What the heck am I talking about? Let me explain. First, we have to understand what “mojo” is. The mojo in your gym is a collective feeling of teamwork, enthusiasm, positive energy, and work ethic. Some gyms have incredibly strong mojo. You can see it when you’ve trained in one of these places for a little while. You look around and notice things.
Everybody is training hard, locke......

Something We Learned At The Olympics
Matt Foreman
August 13 2012
Weightlifting
Hopefully, you all got to watch a lot of weightlifting action at the Olympics over the last couple of weeks. NBCOlympics.com is like a gift from the heavens, showing complete replay coverage of every weight class. This is the first Olympics in my life when I’ve been able to see the entire competition. When I sit down at the computer to watch one of these replays, I practically go into a trance. The whole world just tunes out for a while. One of my cats could be on fire and I wouldn’t......

People Who Lift Weights...And Weightlifters
Matt Foreman
July 30 2012
Weightlifting
A few years ago, I wrote a Performance Menu article about the difference between two types of people: those who lift weights, and those who are weightlifters. You might not have read it because it’s pretty old and I didn’t include it in Bones of Iron. I wasn’t happy with the way it turned out, aside from the main idea which I thought was pretty good. So I’ll hit that idea again here. Maybe the whole thing will taste better if I just keep dumping more frosting on it.
S......

Lifting for Revenge
Matt Foreman

Weightlifting
Alternative teeny rock isn’t my number-one choice of music, but there are a few songs in the genre that I dig. One of them is “Misery Business” by the band Paramore. The lyrics were written by their lead singer, a little peach named Hayley Williams. The song is pretty simple, actually. A girl is gloating because she stole a boy away from another girl she hates like hell. She jacked this girl’s man, and she just loves the fact that the chick is suffering. I don’t hav......

Weightlifting
A lot of you guys are Performance Menu subscribers, right? For those of you who are, you might have noticed that we’ve been running a special section in the magazine for the past few issues.
About eight months ago, I was cleaning out some old boxes in my garage and I found my training journal from 1993. This was when I was twenty-one and training with the Calpian weightlifting club in Washington. For over a year, I literally wrote down every lift, set, and rep I did in training. Absolu......

Finding Doctors With Answers
Matt Foreman
June 25 2012
Weightlifting
Let me tell you a fun little story.
Back around 1999, I went to see a doctor about the pain in my knees. Like most of you, knee pain was nothing new and I was used to living with it. But in this situation, mine was nasty enough that I decided to take the advice of my coach and see a physician to get it checked out. Now, we had a woman who trained in our gym at the time who was one of those people with all the connections, know what I mean? If you needed a good mechanic to fix your car, she kn......

Change of Pace, Let's Do Some Jerks
Matt Foreman

Weightlifting
This post will be a little different from what I’ve been putting up lately. I’ve written a lot of stuff in recent weeks about motivation, lifestyle, inspiration, etc. I’ve loved doing it, many of you have given me some really kind words that I won’t forget, and I’ll come back to those subjects in the future. But for right now, let’s just get some straightforward lifting analysis and advice on something that ALL OF US need to work on. We’re talking about ......
