Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel

MULTI-TASKING!! Everybody knows what this is, right? I’m sure you do, because our society is obsessed with it. We’re all expected to be able to juggle several jobs at the same time, making every one perfect and not showing any fatigue or frazzle. That’s the way of the world nowadays. No wonder you can’t watch TV for more than ten minutes anymore without seeing a commercial for anti-anxiety medication. I think I’m going to officially nam......

Don't let my patella hit you in the face

“Ouch, that looks like it really hurts your knees!”
If you’re a weightlifter, try to make a mental list of how many times you’ve heard somebody say this to you. Irritating, isn’t it? Civilians have always seemed to have this perception that weightlifting is a bone snapping slaughterhouse where it’s just a matter of time before you jump into the bottom position of a clean and your patella will fire out of your body and shoot across the room. I guess it......

I lost my technique, and now I'm upset

I’ve always thought that one of the most frustrating things about being a weightlifter is that you can lose your technique.
Let me explain what I mean when I say “lose your technique,” although anybody who has been an Olympic lifter for any extended time period already knows exactly what I’m talking about. So…you’re learning the snatch and the clean and jerk, which are probably two of the most difficult skills in any branch of athletics. Yo......

Ever have one of those moments that just makes your whole mood sour and pissy? I had one at the 2000 Olympic Trials in New Orleans. I was standing in the warm-up room, watching the best lifters in the country getting ready for battle. It was pretty hardcore being back there, let me tell you. Years earlier, a coach had told me that the intensity in the warm-up room at the Olympic Trials was so thick you could cut it with a knife. He wasn’t kidding, jack. So I should have been feeling great,......

High school kids aren't all idiots

Man...it never ceases to amaze me how I seem to hear some of the smartest, deepest ideas from some of the most unlikely people.
I'm a high school English teacher. Last week, my students turned in a personal narrative essay I assigned them. One of the essays I read was from a student who will never, ever be confused with Ernest Hemingway. Initially, I had this kid pegged as one of those types who will probably spend a lot of time with his ha......

I'm writing this blog entry on September 11th, 2011. As the whole world is aware of, this is the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 World Trade Center terrorist attacks. Ten years ago, we all found out that you can lose everything you have in an instant.
Two years ago, my wife and I took a trip to New York City. The first place we went when we got to the city was Ground Zero (site where the WTC used to be). It was pretty intense to walk around the area and think about what h......
