While vertically-oriented hip extension, such as we strive for in the Olympic lifts, is more commonly helpful, horizontally-oriented hip extension, such as we see in the kettlebell swing and many other kettlebell movements, absolutely has its place—one key example being certain knee strikes in MMA.
Greg,
you are absolutely correct this horiszontal hip extension is the proper technique for delivering a violent knee attack. Where most injuries occur during MMA style training is during knee strikes where Knee/Hip flexion is the driving force causing a sheering force to be driven down into the supporting leg where most often the athlete rises onto the toes and damage to the achilles occurs!
