Getting Ready For The New Year
Greg Everett
January 3 2012
General
2012 came sooner than I expected. 2011 seemed like a series of delays and unavoidable protraction. The day to day tedium continually prevented my completion and in some cases even initiation of numerous projects that are now stacked up in queue. My hope is that this year will be a bit smoother and I'll be able to ramp visible productivity back up to full speed. We have multiple books in progress, both from me and other authors, tons of new website content that I want to get out, and a number of ......

Flexibility For The Overhead Squat
Greg Everett
December 12 2011
General
Bob Asks: Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but I could not find it in Greg’s book (which I own) or on the website. I am 44 and just starting O-lifting lessons here in Singapore. Working the normal progressions w/ a shower curtain rod.
Am nearly 6’5”, so flexibility is a problem for me…have made reasonable progress with the legs, but seem to be stuck on my overhead squat. Can barely get down to a quarter squat while holding the shower curtain rod overhead when it b......

They'll Never Take Us Alive

Does anybody here ever feel like they suffer from paranoia?
I guess before you all start answering yes or no, let’s get an actual definition of what paranoia is. Paranoid thinking is when a person is heavily influenced by the fear that there is some kind of threat against them, and this fear can become so intense that the person becomes delusional. Basically, being paranoid means that you think everybody (or everything) is out to get you. You walk around freaked out becau......

All right, I finally got around to creating a new feature I've been wanting to have for a long time. You can now export all of the training cycles we have posted online into a Word doc so it's easy to print but also to edit if you want to make any changes for yourself. Just click the "Export Cycle as Word Doc" button at the top of each cycle page. View training cycles here.......

Some Nice Soothing Music To Piss Us All Off
Matt Foreman
November 15 2011
General
You all like music, right?
I’m going to assume the answer to that question is yes, and I’ll also wager that you probably like to have music playing when you train. Many of you have probably shopped around on I-Tunes and set up some playlists that are specifically for the gym. You picked music that makes you feel good, the type of stuff that gets your motor running and builds up some energy for your workouts.
I don’t think there’s any question that musi......

A Few Words With Henry Rollins
Greg Everett
November 14 2011
General
I've been a big fan of Henry Rollins for many years, from Black Flag to Rollins Band to his books and spoken word shows/CDs/DVDs. He was a very early inspiration to me as a model of self-reliance, motivation and work ethic—a guy who just wanted to put his head down and get things done without ostentation or applause, and who did nothing less than exactly what he was inspired to do.
Rollins has just release his newest in a long string of books, Occupants. Check it out along with his old......

Assistance Exercises With Cool Freaky Names
Matt Foreman
November 8 2011
General
I was inspired by Greg’s recent blog post about the heaving snatch balance. What an idea…doing a quick write-up on a specific exercise instead of training philosophy, etc. Also, I always thought the name “heaving snatch balance” was interesting. I wonder who named it that. Having the word “heaving” attached to a barbell exercise is pretty unique, and it makes me wonder about how many other creative words we can add to the names of lifts.&n......

The Push-up: Why Is This So Hard?
Greg Everett
November 7 2011
General
One of the things in my life that continually mystifies me is how something as simple and pure as the push-up has become so confusing and impossible for so many people. This is like the exercise equivalent of every adult in the world suddenly forgetting how to walk (yet still wanting to do the triple jump).
This very issue is what caused me to add planks into every day of our introductory class series. I was embarrassed by the inability of people in the gym to do excellent push-ups and decid......

Peer Pressure Is A Good Thing
Matt Foreman
November 2 2011
General
Remember when you learned about peer pressure for the first time? You were probably in high school, or maybe junior high. A teacher showed you a video where a juvenile delinquent kid with a motorcycle offers drugs to a little straight-laced kid that looks like a church missionary. As the missionary kid tries the drugs for the first time, Inna Gadda Da Vida starts playing in the background and some kind of kaleidoscope effect starts happening on the screen. Three minutes later......
