Catalyst At The American Open... Amaze Balls, Matt Foreman
Catalyst At The American Open... Amaze Balls
Matt Foreman  |  December 10 2012  |  Weightlifting
What a meet for Catalyst Athletics… Most of you probably read the write-up Greg did on the American Open last week. I don’t want to repeat the stuff he told you, so I’ll try to find some fresh thoughts about the things I saw in Palm Springs. When Greg described the awesomeness of the whole experience, he wasn’t exaggerating or overblowing it. I’m telling you straight up…that was one hell of a weekend for the Catalyst team. Between the American Open, J......

The 2012 American Open, Or The Weekend I Almost Killed Matt Foreman
Greg Everett  |  December 5 2012  |  Weightlifting
The dust has settled for the most part after the 2012 American Open in Palm Springs, California, so I’m going to see if I can do a recap of the weekend. This year we had 12 lifters competing—I believe that made us the second largest team there behind the juggernaut East Coast Gold (technically 11 since Caleb lifts unattached—details). Normally the American Open is somewhere in the Midwest or on the East Coast. Getting to spend a December weekend in Palm Springs was incredib......

Okay, Here's The Thing About Cardio...
Matt Foreman  |  November 20 2012  |  Weightlifting
I’ve been thinking I should start doing some cardio. My doctor told me I should. I think he said it would help me avoid death or something like that. But the whole idea doesn’t make any sense to me, because doing cardio makes me wish I was dead anyway. So what’s the point? I probably wouldn’t need to do much of it. Absolutely anything would be an improvement over what I’m doing now. I could jog to the end of my yard and back, and that would be a dramatic incre......
How To Coach Women, Matt Foreman
How To Coach Women
Matt Foreman  |  November 6 2012  |  Weightlifting
Okay, does anybody want some useful little tidbits about coaching women? I hope so, because I’ve got plenty of them. And before you start flinching, this isn’t designed to be one of my sarcastic funny posts. I’ve actually got legit things to say about this. First of all, you have to start with the basic outlook that what the ladies are doing is just as important as what the men are doing, and it deserves the same level of respect. I think we all know that sports have histor......
Screw Nutrition, Matt Foreman
Screw Nutrition
Matt Foreman  |  October 25 2012  |  Weightlifting
I have almost nothing helpful to say about nutrition. Everybody who reads this probably knows more about it than I do. My study of it pretty much stopped after a class I took my freshman year in college. I did well in the class, though. The professor made copies of an essay I wrote and gave them to the rest of the class…told them I had a “heightened understanding” of how to eat for performance. I didn’t tell her I was eating Oatmeal Crème Pies when I wrote it. ......

Reader Request- About Wraps, Belts, And Straps
Matt Foreman  |  October 15 2012  |  Weightlifting
One of our readers contacted Greg recently and asked if we would put up a blog post about the use of equipment for Olympic lifters. Specifically, the question was about belts, straps, wrist/knee wraps, etc. This is a pretty good example of why you guys should feel free to contact us when you have topics you want to read about. I actually wrote something about this exact topic several months ago, but I never posted it because I thought, “Nobody will be interested in this because it’s ......
A Quick Thought About Coaching People Who Think They Suck, Matt Foreman
A Quick Thought About Coaching People Who Think They Suck
Matt Foreman  |  October 10 2012  |  Weightlifting
Several years ago, I was hanging out in the warm-up room at a meet, chatting with a guy who was a two-time Olympian. Neither of us were competing in this contest, so we were just relaxing backstage and watching the other lifters get ready. One of the athletes warming up was a relatively new guy who trained with the Olympian dude I was talking to. Here is the conversation we had: Me (pointing at the new guy as he warmed up): “That guy trains with you, right?” Two-time Olympian: ......
Stop And Smell The Chalk, Mike Gray
Stop And Smell The Chalk
Mike Gray  |  October 8 2012  |  Weightlifting
Those of you who are reading this are probably now or have been in your life pretty passionate about Olympic lifting. I want you to stop and think about this chapter in your life; for some it will be quick and for others it might very well be a lifetime. We have all at one time hated and or loved it for myriad reasons. Those days when you feel like absolute crap and getting out of bed is a freaking chore, driving to the gym and you hit every bit of traffic in the city and warming up feels lik......
10 Things New Women Weightlifters Should Know, Aimee Anaya Everett
10 Things New Women Weightlifters Should Know
Aimee Anaya Everett  |  October 1 2012  |  Weightlifting
1. Lift with other girls. Lifting with men is motivating; however, they just don’t understand certain things. Such as why we act crazy in the gym. Only girls can understand why you have to turn up Fergalicious or Beat It on Pandora to pump you up and/or have you break out in your PR dance. I think other girls, especially those who you have built a strong friendship with and have a sense of loyalty to, will keep you motivated even on the worst of days, and be smiling and cheering with you o......
A Letter To Catalyst Athletics (and Everybody Else), Matt Foreman
A Letter To Catalyst Athletics (and Everybody Else)
Matt Foreman  |  September 24 2012  |  Weightlifting
Do you ever get embarrassed when you think about some of the stupid things you said when you were younger? I think we all probably do. We remember some idiotic comments we made, things we knew we shouldn’t have said out loud, and we wonder how our heads ever got jammed so far up our butts. I cringe sometimes when I think about stuff that came out of my mouth when I was in my twenties. Over the years, I’ve changed a lot. That’s normal, I guess. We all grow up and mature, and......
